Trying my hand at total car destruction

ok, not really, but that might be the end result, as well as a few product warranties voided. all in the name progess right? i like to think of myself as a compitent computer builder. i also bought my mazda speed 3 about a month ago (dont even have plates yet). well i was looking for a new head unit, because i would like a better way to interact with music, and i wanted to be able to play DVD's for the passengers, and navi for myself. i also most definitly wanted it to be an in-dash unit if i was going with a touchscreen. so here i am, pricing out parts, and figuring out how not to light myself on fire with the battery. it may help that i am an electrican for the AF aircraft, not im not as clueless as i like to sound (right?).

GOAL: a touchscreen unit that will play my music, DVD's (and blu-ray probably), provide navigation (with turn-by-turn), connect to the internet, and act as a OBDII reader/datalogger, use a mic for bluetooth calling, while maintaining an OEM look on the dashboard.

Longer-term-goal: new speakers/amp connected to the audio out on the computer (after i un-broke myself lol)

here's what i've been spec'ing out so-far, keep in mind my thought pattern is if its worth doing, its worth overdoing, so that hardware can last for a much greater time frame:

    Comp
    Mobo: zotac ionitx-l-e $190
    CPU: atom 330 integrated
    RAM: kingston valuram ddr3 2x1gb @1066hz ~$37
HDD: OCZ Vertex Turbo 30gb HDD ~$ 160 (bought already)
PSU: m3-atx power supply $70 (or picoPSU 160-xt)
    Case: M350 universal case $40
    DVD: suggestions?
    GPS: suggestions?
    OBDII: suggestions?
    mic:
soundcard?: (will wait till new audio set up is in progress)

    Internet
WiFi: embedded on mobo (nearly useless reviews say, not a problem)
external solution: boost mobile phone? $20 every 3 months

    Touchscreen
    Unit: cartft (bought)
mounting bracket: this piece (or custom fab piece)

    software
    OS: Win7 ~$120
FE: Carma (check forums), or if its not going to cut it Centrafuse ~$80

Estimated total with current products: $460 plus what i paid for touchscreen and HD already. (plus wires, usb hubs, and anything without a product, mounting bracket)

anything with a "?" is subject to severe question, anything i currently have listed i think would be good. under computer anything below dvd is of decending priority, anything without an actual product i dont have spec'ed out yet.

    *Sigh* ok... resting now

    Edit time:

added PSU, according to this site, <snip> no longer applicable
    edit2:

making a new setup, in progress

Get plates first. that's usually a little more important :P.

Why are you going with an i3? From the list of things you want to do, it seems a less power-hungry machine like the atom would work flawlessly. You left a harddrive off the list. I'd recommend SSD's but if you are going to run CF, you can't expect a fast boot experience anyway... I'm not sure how fast "Carma" starts up.

hrmm... i guess i did . i was looking at em when i posted that. trying to find one with enough space to fit windows 7 and all my other apps, preferably sata II, and apparently SLC. was reading somewhere SLC is better for an OS SSD vs a MLC due to the wear leveling shenanigans, but them things aint cheap yesh. also, planing to use an external HD to hold all my media. but those are easy to come by so im not worried.

the CPU is a power hog for this kind of system, however the mobo is a socket LGA 1156. and the mobo has like a billion USB outs, plus DVI, and i know its going to be able to handle blu-ray w/o a problem. it'll handle ddr3 as well.

right now the last "essential" piece is the PSU, and motherboard availability.

Not to be thread stealing, but im looking for almost the exact same thing. My primary goal will be playing music and ODBII datalogging / real time monitoring. I currently use PCMSCAN but it gets real old clicking connect, hitting ok, and clicking start logging then do everything else in reverse before you turn the engine off or else the software will puke. plus i dont have a way to extract the data when i move the logs over to another pc, i would love to get some graphs going for fuel econ, a map of where ive been, temperature, etc... I would love to find some software that automatically queried my ELM based ODBII-usb/serial board to check for a connection and log everything.

one thing ill add though is video recording, 2 channels. Havent found any software that doesnt requiring to be running in the foreground to actually record, but i have about 6 different cards and software at my disposal to try.

Longer-term-goal Short term goal for me: new speakers/amp connected to the audio out on the computer (after i un-broke myself lol)
    Internet
WiFi: embedded on mobo connecting to my own networks
external solution: tether to blackberry via bluetooth if possible (i want it to automatically set up and tear down when it detects my blackberry in my pocket.)

    Touchscreen
Unit: no idea. ill be mounting in a crown vic police car. if i cant find a unit to fit in the 1 3/4 (estimated) din oddball size ill get a doubledin and angle it. or ill just use a laptop mount for a monitor.

    Comp
Mobo: zotac dual core atom ~ spare already have
    RAM: 4gb ddr2 ~ already have
HDD: whatever i feel like throwing at it, probably a laptop drive but maybe an SSD because i go off road a lot.
PSU: I have no idea, im thinking of inverter + atx, an atx that runs off of 12-16vdc, or swapping the zotac for the one that uses a 12vdc brick. (must have feature to sleep the computer when car turned off and start computer when turned on)
DVD: no optical drive, pull images via wifi from house or work.
    GPS: anything, probably BU-353
OBDII: Currently using PCMSCAN but i want to have automatic all-time datalogging of everything. Im a shadetree mechanic so I use this stuff a lot and love to watch realtime numbers.
Bluetooth & mic: none. (well maybe in the future)
soundcard?: onboard going to 2 amps, mids and sub. (no im not a crazy soundsystem person, its mainly for real clean audio.)

    software
    OS: Win7x64 or server 2003x64
    FE: no idea.
GPS: MS streets and trips maybe? no clue

Its a typical P71 vic with all of the goodies, plus when they gave it to me instead of sending it to auction I started work on it. relocated optima to the trunk, bunch of other electrical work, engine work, etc... list goes on but this isnt the place for it. Ill be mounting the pc in the trunk next to all of the other equipment

So needless to say Ill be watching Gaoes' thread closely.

i would make sure that any plug-ins and FE you use are going to work with 64 bit windows. just a little nusiance you might want to keep in mind. as for audio, the speaker in the driver door is making not good noises :\ i might have to replace em sooner then expected due to past owner abuse. the reason i'm going with an optical is because its about 2 hours to the nearest city (ok, real city) and my dvd collection is rather limited.

what are you using the video recording for, just ooc? want to watch yourself backing into that mail box over and over?

Theres really no reason to use 64bit in a car environment....it will only decrease performance.

Not to mention that there's no point in using 64 bit windows with only 32bit apps and 2GB of ram...

I also had an acquaintance T-bone another car at 45 because the other car ran the light. the 2 people in the other car said the vic ran the light, then he whipped out the video which clearly showed that he had a green. This is what really sold me on putting the video back in my car.

I already have the camera installed because it was fully loaded when my p71 was retired, all of the expensive stuff like the electronics in the trunk is the stuff that the dept kept.

yea i know 64bit is overkill, but i dont have a workstation the doesnt have less than 4. I run server 2003 x64 for my main gaming rig. the ONLY 2 computers i have which arent 64bit are my current ODB2 scanning laptop and my router. I dont think ill have any issues with the 64bit part, so far the ONLY thing ive had problems with is dvr software but i might run that in vmware + xp 32bit) if i opt for a USB capture card. (eww, but its an option)
