Sound Control Vs. Extra Features

So… new to the form nice to meet everyone. Anyway I have been doing car audio for some time both professionally and for fun. I got out of it for a few years to do the Army thing. Now I am back. I have a Chevy Tahoe 01 with some small stuff done at this point but I am stuck and very disappointed. I have finally decided to upgrade the head unit. I had a Kenwood KDC-915 Ex unit for the last 8 years, maybe and it has been great. Good Sound control but it is old and does not support new types of media. So I changed to a Eclipse DDin AVN726e. The unit is great in all aspects but one the sound control sucks. It has no crossovers for anything but the subs at 80 Hz. I have subs and a 8 speaker system in my Tahoe (listed later) I really need something to pull the bass out of the surround speakers. What would everyone suggest? I don’t like the crossovers on the amps I think they suck and are just a guess.

Now as for what you should do with your sound control, If you are just looking to remove the bass from the smaller speakers I would suggest a passive crossover, something like "BassBlockers" from crutchfield. Last I checked they made 3 different models with different cutoff points. If you really want to get into it more, you would be looking at getting an equalizer.

Another option is getting a computer that supports ASIO or is compatible with kxProject and use the carputer's soundcard to control all of the audio.

passive crossovers will work, but if you are familiar with comp audio, you might realize that active is better for control. and i don't like bass blockers-- they are only a capacitor-- which is a 6db/oct curve, which aint much when the volume goes up... If you are handy with a soldering iron, there are pleny of graphs online with the capacitance-to-cuttoff frequency tables, and you can save yourself the cost of the fancy bass blocker shrink wrap, and make your own...

there are primarily 2 programs for active audio control(there are others, but not as popular, or possibly as easy to use...)-- Console, and Audio Mulch. both are VST Hosts, and support ASIO drivers, meaning that they have a mulitude of plugins(called VST Plugins) that you can add. the plugins control and manipulate the audio, and the amount of plugins is only limited by the processing power on your computer(each plugin takes up a certain amount of processing power).

the great thing about these is that you can play with the plugins and try something that works for you-- most members use ElectriQ, but i havent taken the time to understand it yet, so i use karma fx plugins...both are very similar(similar effect on audio), just with a different interface...

thanks for the info. I really want to go active but i do not have a car pc but i am really new to this side of car audio. I have just one question do they make audio cards that will break out the audio from the pc. I need six outs from the card. left and right front, left and right rear and mono sub output and maybe a center channel. I am also looking the output of said "card" to be near 5 volts. Also how do you overcome the vibration of the car on the Hard drives?

i don't know of any cards that advertise a 5 volt output, but i use a preamp that puts it well above that, so it is not a issue.

for the sound card outputs, using a couple of programs (specifically, asio4all, virtual audio cable, and your choice of vst host), you can use almost any sound card, and digitally rewire it in the computer to output what you want on whatever output port you want.

as for the vibration-- there have been a couple of threads on this in the environmental section, and most will end up being resolved by stating that the best hard drive mounting is to mount it securely to the car/case, so that the drive can't move.
the biggest issue with vibration reducing mount ideas is that most end up creating secondary vibrations due to the mount...

there have also been members that have had hard drives survive multiple car-totalling-accidents when securely mounted...

The external x-fi units put out ~4-4.5V which should be close enough. Thats 6 channels (5.1) usually with spdif too.

Looks like i am going to try to build a pc that will do everything i want but there are alot of other post to ask my new questions. Thanks for all the help guys.
