    not a bad idea as it would give u a rough idea about what u want. and it would be cheaper... three things to avoid avidly 1) big bright screen at night 2) screen being outa peripheral view from road 3) trackpad or mouse while driving (pretty much a no-brainer)

    but i dont know exactly what would be required for a laptop install, i have run across laptop installs and worklogs though.

    @soundman
    those boards are the lcd/lighting controller and usb touchscreen controller. the are about half the over all thickness of the whole unit inside the plastic and i think they can be moved via custom data cable/s but it aint cheap, there is a thread around some place about it but im not sure if its this site or not.
    & what about small tool drawer rails? iv seen some really small ones that move nicely and pretty tough... just a thought...

    Yeah I was planning on using some small rails to attach it to but if the screen is too thick I wont be able to put it in there anyway. I just figured that with the case removed it would be thin enough to slide in and out of there. I guess not. I worry about placing the screen really low but I don't have much choice if I want to do this I guess. I don't have anywhere else to mount the thing cleanly.

    eyeballing the screen with a tape measure, with out the lcd controller board (lust the touch screen, lcd panel, lighting) is only half an inch give or take a 16th. the board itself is only as tall as a few of the large capacitors witch are about another half inch. they might very from screen to screen but i dont think it can be that much.

    So what are you thinking? That it could fit if parts are moved around?

    maybe ... if you could move those boards away form the display u would cut the depth of the unit in half. just remeber that the more moded your setup gets the more fab work youll have to do to finish it.

    ive got a link to the ebay page of the display im talkin about, look at the pics and the "External dimension" to get a better idea of what im talkin about

    7 inch screen ...

    if the two ribbon cables could be longer u could move controller board away so the only thing u have to slide in and out would be what u see in those pics... now how you do that effectively is the million $$$ question

    hope that helps

    Does anyone have the dimensions of a Lilliput EBY701T monitor? The case is pretty thick but I know its a popular screen around here so maybe someone has dimensions without the shell.

    Well I think I figured some stuff out this weekend. I decided I think I'd like to mount the screen low where the stock cd changer is and the stock storage tray is. Reason being, I can't fit it anywhere else at this point I don't think. I'd also like to start this build pretty small since this car is a pain in the a$$ ha. I can't utilize the bluetooth because I can't hook it up to my system like I wanted so bluetooth isn't an option really. So basically I'm looking at cds, mp3s, dvds, nav. My stock cd changer is just about shot. It skips constantly. So I'm hoping that the laptop will work out now since it doesn't need to run much stuff at once. Thoughts? Will the laptop work with the lilliput screen?

    we would really need to see the laptop specs, and rear jacks to be able to help-- most laptops 'should' have a rear vga out, but if i told you that yours did without looking at it, murphies law states that i'd be wrong--at the cost of your wallet...

    Yeah thats understandable. I don't know the specs on the computer at this point tho. I was planning on using an old one my sister got because it's smaller than my old one. I had an Inspiron 1600 and its kind of beefy for a car application. Now I saw a few threads that had some pretty small boards. If I go with an actual setup I'd love to have keep this as small as I can. Is there a smaller MOBO and everything you guys could recommend now that I won't be using too much of the computer? At most it would have to run the front end, mp3s, and nav at the same time. I'm just very limited on space in this car.

    start with the faq section - http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/advfaq.php

    figure out what u want (front end, screen/s, gps, obd2, ect.) then your limitations (space, looks, budget, ect.) then start planning n pre-build stuff. good reading/planing can save a bunch of $$$. IMHO building a pc is a balance between $$$, size, speed/quality

    as far as size ive managed fit everything i have inside a m350 case and the m350 its just smaller than a 1 DIN automotive slot. im keepin everything in-dash
