    So new I am stupid

Ok so I am very new to this whole car pc thing and I don't need or want one for my main unit. What I would like to do is have a car pc run my back seat entertainment. I would like to have two touch screen headunits that run independently. So my questions are

    1. Would I need two separate pcs to run the two screens seperately?
    2. What linux os and front end would be easy to install and would do video cleanly.

I think it depends on what kind of entertainment you have in mind. If it's just movies, one pc with two sound cards (or two video cards, depending on the board) should be enough. Now if each screen are going to run a videogame, then yes, it's better to have two pcs.

Note that if one screen is browsing the web while the other is playing video, each time the guy playing video touch the screen (say FF a video), it will steal focus from the other screen. The mouse pointer will be gone, until the screen is touched again. Not a big problem, but the other guy/kid may not expect that. If he is using a mouse, though, he may click somewhere on the video screen no knowing what he is doing, etc.

    1) no, you can use a dual-output something or rather like the zotac ION board.

    2) LinuxICE, and there is also LinuxICE. Did I mention LinuxICE is a pre-configured OS + Frontend for vehicle stuff? Other people run the nGhost frontend on stock ubuntu, gentoo, or [pick your flavour]. I also hear OpenMobile will work on Linux someday.

nGhost is engineered with multiple systems/monitors in mind. While other FE's offer only dual output support or other limited numbers (say, 99). nGhost is the only FE to offer 'N' monitor and soundcard support and is the only FE to be "clusterable" on multiple machines. nGhost also can cluster in a multi-planetary system.

Well in linux, I think you can actually just run two different sessions of Xserver with different screens/mice(touchscreen)/keyboards for each.

What I did was just create two different "screens". Using XServer 1.6, I had independant mice for each screen, but dragging both simultaneously resulted in a nasty bug either in the touchscreen driver (egalax) or in the XServer. In most of the upcoming linux distro's (Ubuntu Lucid) with XServer 1.7 or 1.8 you'll get xinput2 and multi-pointer-x which should allow multiple input/mice devices for a single screen. Hopefully the egalax driver takes advantage of this.
