Should i use a laptop for a car PC

hey whats up guys i am very new at this i have never done anything like this i got the idea of the car pc from a friend of mine a while back my old car was just to much of a piece of junk to do it. But now i have a much nicer car and a spare laptop and i am wondering if i should use that as a car pc and buy a flip up screen for my dash. I have a 02 escalade and i have a pioneer deck in it and i want to put something in the spot where the cd chnager use to be and i was thinking a flip up dvd player for ps3 and dvds but now im thinking a touchscreen for a car pc to do alot more than dvds and ps3 but i dont know where to start. Anyone with any ideas or suggestions feel free to leave them i would like to get an idea or plan for what i am going to do. Thanks

I'm still in the planning stages myself for my car PC. But I'm planning on using an old laptop that I have lying around. I don't see any problem with that. The idea is to be able to use the PC for media, navigation, OBDII diagnostics/monitoring and maybe videos. My old laptop will handle all that no problem so I don't see a reason to build a new PC when I've got what I need just lying around .

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend that you use the laptop and go with a touch screen. And you can get cheap cigarette lighter adapters for laptops as well so you don't need to rely on an inverter. You get so much more out of it that just being able to watch videos. But that's just my 2 cents.

Also, this might not be the best place for your question. This is "Show off your projects", for completed projects. The forums have lots of discussions pertaining to laptop vs full pc for a car pc, etc.

Why is this in the Show off Your Project forum?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

don't get a flip up vga lcd screen-- it is easier, cheaper, and less time consuming to just give me your money..

as of now, the current flip-up vga screens all have very poor quality builds-- some like to strip the plastic gears that lift the screen, and others, the video cable ribbon that works the display will break from flexing(of all things, wouldn't they expect a flip-up screen to, well, flip-up?)

otherwise, start in the FAQ's listed in darque's sig, and learn a little beofr jumping into this crazy hobby..
