    What Computer To Use

Hey guys I've long been considering put a car pc into my 83 suburban. I'm doing a complete resto on it. Firstly the engine bay then new interior and so on and so on. Anyways ive been looking at everything i could as far as car pc's go and i completely get the idea of using a small mobo and setup for space constraints but considering i dont use the third row seats ever and i have that big bed space i was wondering about just going full size computer. I have plenty of space. I plan on running a march performance dual alternator setup with a fairly decent capacitor. I want to run 2 Rockford Fosgate 10" dvc power series subs along in the back powered by an apropriate rockford amp. Then all the speakers will be Focal 3-way components in the front and 6x9's in the back all powered by of course another rockford fosgate amp.

My only concern is a power supply to the computer. I will be running a EVGA E760 CLASSIFIED mobo along with a good 4gigs of ram dash mounted blueray and a few more things to add but im at work and i gotta go.

you will need to use one of the many computer power calculators available to make sure that however you intend to power it will be sufficient.

and if you haven't seen them yet, the faq's is a great place to start as well:

one of the toughest things to get used to is that carpc's rarely require the same amount of computing power that you usually use in a gaming, or home system. ie: you really are not going to be running photoshop, editing videos, or playing COD on the road in 90% of the setups...

the whole blueray-incar thing is highly debatable-- in most cases, you will be using a 7" screen that has a default resolution of 800x480(or using the computers minimum settings, 800x600). in this case, blueray has absolutely zero advantage over a standard definition movie... the only foreseeable advantage is bragging rights, otherwise, everything just costs more for a blueray setup...

The blueray idea would be pointless if i was just using touchscreen lilli's for display only but im not. I plan to have 3 lilli then the actual viewing screen will be 2 LG 20" led backlit monitors. 1 in front dash and other in middle section.

I want everyone to be able to game, use the internet, watch movies and listen to music and run programs in the backround to so i do want the computing power.

I will have 40+ movies dvd or blueray and another 30+ games some demanding others not so much.

Im not interested in spending time trying to figure out how what the minimum power requirement will be cause the video cards i plan to use demand the use of a 600watt minimum powersupply

So power inverter seems like the only way to go and that will have to be modded for sure.

I've only bought 2 CD's in my life, and less DVD's. I don't like having to deal with discs that can get scratched. If you have a computer in your car, you should just store your movie's as 1080p mkv or divx files on a large hard drive. It's so much easier. I am going to tether my cellphone's 3G so I can download and stream movies in the car.

i have started buying cd's and dvd's more because of the limited bitrate, and sometimes the quality of downloaded media.. my trick to keep teh cd's decent is that i rip them as flac, and then put the cd way in a corner,in the jacket, where it won't get touched...

it stinks that i do tend to get a lot of songs i don't want, but when i can control the quality, it is worth it imo...

The problem with a pc is only one person gets to use it at a time. Unless you plan on multiple pc's in the vehicle I think you are going way overkill on the pc. Best bet for what you are looking for I think is a small pc for media purposes and adding a gaming console of your choice for the gaming. If you really want to get into it add a second pc to the mix. Could have all 3, giving you many more options and probably use the same or less power than a full blown gaming rig you want. Can throw in a cheap used 4 port switch to network them all together.

Come to think of this, a modded original xbox with xbmc would make a pretty nice carputer. Little on the big side, but it already has a great front end for media, only downside is I don't know that it would be touch screen compatible.
