Is what I am thinking making sense?

Hi everyone. Amazing site, I am glad it exists.

Right now I am running a Kenwood KDC-942u. It has T/A, basic crossover network, and 3 sets of preouts. I was originally thinking of just using MiniDSP etc, but am now leaning towards a small CarPC to run a 2 way plus sub active front stage. I already have amps, so that isnt a problem. A couple things I am wondering though.

1st. Since I would be needing to run crossover and time alignment/equalizer processing, this is probably going to take up some serious CPU usage. Thus the Intel Atom setups I see are probably not for me, correct? I was thinking of running some dual core or higher setup (clock it around 3 ghz) for that. Good idea?

Here are the parts I was considering (Canada)

2nd. Are the lillyput monitors the cheapest, and best option for touchscreen? I am not going to watch movies ever, so I don't need great colours or anything fancy. It would be for the use of accessing music and playlists, thats IT.

3rd. Can I mount my PC in the trunk, and run a VGA/USB cable to the front where the monitor is, for power and signal? Or is that not a good idea.

4th and final. I dont want to do an elaborate dash setup. My car isn't expensive, and I don't want to treat it like it is. The way I see it, a good car pc setup is transferrable easily with about an afternoons work (I mean without custom mounting etc.) Could I just make a bracket to hold my monitor, so I can remove it and take it out of the car at night etc?. And the hookup via USB/VGA just be removeable?

Thank you very much for your help guys.

lol, i was just going disproved about the audio processing requirements in another thread today...

    1. this depends-- if you were to use a creative sound card that can use the kxproject drivers, you can get the soundcard to manipulate the audio, so a atom setup will work fine..

if you don't want to, or decide to get a different card, and so you must use the processor for this, then yes--i personally run a pentium dual core(e5200 model) and it handles my current crossover/eq setup fine-- stays at around 5% usage...

    2. no, there are cheaper-- check ebay, but i would rate lilliputs standard touch screens as the most consistant quality.

    3. yes.

    4. yes. in fact, most lilli's come with a bracket that you could mount to your dash, and all lilli's (except the usb powered ones) have a single cable 'whip' that everything plugs into-- unplug this, and the monitor can come out easily..

Thanks alot for the reply. KX Project, I will search, but it seems to be a hardware-level processor? I would still prefer a DC full processor like you did.

I will check ebay, thank you.

I am glad I can send the cable that far.

What do you think of quality compared to a car h/u? Is it equivalent? And what about volume...since output RMS voltage will probably not be like 4v right?

for the screens-- i guess i didn't type it as i should--there are some cheaper screens, but they seem to have as many issues as money you save...(search for shark screens here-- there are a couple of threads around here) some could be good, but if they are bad, is it worth the risk?

yes the kx project basically reprograms the chipset of the audio card. i ran it for a little while, and it worked great, the only reason i don't anymore is because i started having boot issues with the pci flex extender that i needed to use in my install, and it just wasn't worth getting a new adapter.. not a fault of the card, or motherboard...

the output volume depends entirely on the card-- some cards have enough output, others need a preamp..(i use some jl-audio cl-rlc preamps, and did a review of them in the review section)

otherwise, i think that a carpc can easily surpass a hu-- both in sound quality, and in adjustability..(there is a thread in the car audio section on this-- it was recently updated, so it should be near the top-- something about a 'audio advisor says computer audio is horrible')..
