    Info from computer via iBus?

    Hi guys.

I've read up on mp3car in the past for information, but now I've decided to try and get involved in things a little. Anyways, I'm looking for a way to communicate with the car's computer, preferably via Visual Basic (yes, .NET) in the long run.

Exactly like this. The amount of data-reading and system-control (windows/doors) is PERFECT.
And I'm assuming this would work for the physical connection to the car PC?

So, could you guys give me some tips on where to get started? I'm just having trouble connecting these things in my head -- how can I get from Visual Basic to sending and reading the messages like in the iBusRR plugin, through my own code? I'm planning on releasing anything I come up with as a frontend and backend combination, assuming I can get that far.

Thanks guys.. everything helps. I know I'm just showing up and asking for help right off the bat, but I have to start somewhere.

The links you have posted are specific for BMW's and only a certain range of them. Also the information available varies from car to car.

Other brands of car may or may not have a way of reading such info.

First question is, what car are you looking to do with this.

If it is fairly modern look into OBDII and CANBUS.

Right after I submitted it I realized I forgot my car.. my bad. It's an '07 X3, so I was looking at BMW approaches correctly.

Edit: and thanks for the quick response.

    Meet nobdy.

It's the backend part that allows you to make quick plugins and/or apps that talk to the car.

Well the BMW X3 E83 has iBus so you are on the right track

have a look at iBus Analyser

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/bebo...us%20Analyser/

it has the source included, which is in VB6 (at least last time I looked)

Thank you both. I'll hopefully be looking into these in the next week or two after talking with the other party involved with this project, and let you all know how it turns out.

To clarify, I am eventually looking for reading of the following information:

    - Engine Information (OBD): RPM, Pressures, Levels, etc.
    - GPS Information: GPS Location.
    - Lights: Which are currently on?
    - Door status: Locked/unlocked/open?
    - Speed from computer, not GPS.
    - Steering wheel position (in degrees, preferably).

And sending messages to the following:

    - Lights: Turn different lights on/off (fogs, etc?)
    - Locks: Lock/unlock doors.
    - Windows: Roll windows up/down, open/close moonroof.

I'm wondering how much of this is actually possible through the I-Bus interface.

It looks like some polling is available but there doesn't seem to be detiled instructions on how to get the polling to work.

Thanks, Enforcer. That's just what I was looking for. For the ones not available through iBus, any tips on what to look in to?

    Also, I saw this:

I can imagine that several temperatures like water, oil, inside- and outsideair might be availiable as well as probably rpm and speed information with a higher samplerate than provided via the $80 xx $bf $18 xx xx cs word.

Temperature is broadcast at a 10-second repetition rate.
Speed and RPM are broadcast at a 2-second repetition rate.
IKE sensor status are broadcast at a 10-second repetition rate.
Any ideas on that? (Primarily reading speed and RPM at much shorter intervals?)

That was what my last line was referring to, not sure how to poll

It looks like some polling is available but there doesn't seem to be detailed instructions on how to get the polling to work.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I'll spend some time looking in to it.
