New to CarPCs, not ICE. Acer Aspire Revo and Lilli 8" HDMI Touch in '05 Galant?

I'm a part time Advanced MECP installer for Best Buy, and I've been around the In Car Entertainment business for awhile. But I'm wanting to do a carputer bc I do a decent amount of traveling. I have an Infinity Kappa Four amp, and a Kenwood DDX-616 Touchscreen up front, for now.

In short, I want to do the $200 Acer Aspire Revo Nettop Computer with HDMI output, and a Lilliput 669 with the HDMI, as well as some sort of External DVD drive.

My question is do yall think this would be a decent set-up that would last me awhile?

What is the best option for DC Adapter?

What else do i need to know/have to get this working?

Thanks a bunch for your help.

    1. that is a matter of opinion.. my atom setup got outgrown within a year of building it(granted, i also run audio processing)..

for 'most' setups, a atom-based netbook should be fine...

    2. the most common option seems to be hardwired cig-lighter adapters off ebay..

    3. the faq's:http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/advfaq.php

otherwise, search around for other netbook installs-- i know i have seen a couple..

I think I found a good deal on the 3600 revo, which is a dual-core and has 2gb of ram, so that should do me a little better. I think that a hardwired adapter would be fine, but I wanna be able to get in the car and have the music startup, not have to turn on the comp, and all that. maybe set it up to hibernate when ign is off, and wake when ign on? any thoughts on this?

Thoughts: You really should check out the FAQs, as suggested.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I have been all over the Faqs. I didn't find the answer, however I did find someone who said that he poopped off the power button on the pc and extended the wires to his dashboard.

I think I will do a similar thing, however I'll run the wires to prongs 30 and 87 on an SPDT 12 volt relay and hook 85 to my arm and unarm from my VIPER 5900 (diode isolated of course) and 86 to +12V

It will look like this :

85 and 86 are backwards to how I usually look at them...

I don't know much about computers, but if underneath the power switch, all it needs to do is close the connection, then I think I'm in business, or no?

check for intelligent dc-dc power supplies-- all of the ones in the mp3car store can be connected to the power button to turn the pc on/off based on ign status.

But that is more money and involvement with the computer as opposed to just an "always on" ebay adapter and a bosch relay to hibernate and wake. I suppose a cpu in hibernation pulls less than .5 amps.

laptops are just barely in my grasp-- i use desktop boards, so some of my info might be off..

i think that many netbook users use the cig-lighter adapter, but wire it to a acc circuit, so that it turns off with the car-- and then they set windows to shutdown/hibernate once it sees power go away..

for powering on, you would need to double check the laptop section..

i know one option is something like a 528t pulse timer-- just program it to pulse on--shorting the power switch terminals..

but otherwise, the laptop installs are gonna have more info..

I would wire the adapter to constant, that way it would never lose power.

basically my relay drawing is a pulse that would short the terminals when I wanted it to, either when I start or stop the car, or when I lock/unlock.

    something i missed:

hibernation writes all the data from the ram to the hdd, and then powers the computer off- so the pc does not consume any power while in hibernation. this is where having a laptop can allow you to use the OS power settings instead of a physical shutdown controller-- the pc has a battery that it can run on while saving the hibernate file.

sleep keeps power to the ram, so all your data is still active, but does pull power..
