In a lot of car navi systems from the factory, if you put your car in reverse, the backup camera automatically pops up on the screen. Is there a way to do this with a carputer in a manual car?
Also any product recommendations on cameras? I know there are a lot, preferably one you can see at night, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. IR would be pretty cool too.
there are models of screens that offer a reverse wire input--just check the description of the screen, or email chris from mo-co-so, he should be able to help you with that.. this wire connects to a source that gets +12v whenever the car goes into reverse(your backup lights) and it will auto-switch to a different input, where you have the camera connected.
More than 1 way to do it actually. The usual easiest method is of course to get an LCD screen with the pre-made input for it(which is on many of the lilliput and xenarc touchscreens) wire to reverse light, done.

Using a 7" lilliput that was not wired for the back up camera. The mod is quite simple and there are few threads that show detailed pictures on how to do so. I think you should post what screen model you are using so that someone can chime in and say if it supports auto switching.
the install in the vehicle and running the wires cleanly was the hardest part.
well i actually haven't made any purchases on the screen or camera which is why i am asking. i'm actually converting an old desktop to be my cpu and just ordered an m4-atx. next is the screen, the camera, and other peripherals....
so any suggestions are welcome, i don't want to spend an arm and a leg tho
also i need housing for an 04 g35 for the screen. mp3car.com use to sell one but doesn't look like they do anymore... any suggestions on diy or kits available?
If you are buying a screen I recall a 7" lilliput being sold in the store that will have 2 wires coming off the logic board which are there for the back up camera switching. This will save you the hassle of doing what I did and as long as you hook that up to your reverse lights power you will be fine.
That one will work for you.
that is the thread that does the modification that i had to do. I believe the screen in the post above comes with these components populated on the board. I am like 99% sure on that.
