    Valet Switch to M3-ATX PSU

    Just want to preface with with the disclaimer that I *DID* use the search function, but was unable to discover the information I need.

    WHAT I WANT TO ACCOMPLISH: I'd like to be able to install a switch that will prevent my computer from booting up / waking from hibernation when the switch is set to the OFF position, and have it boot / resume as normal when set to the ON position (which will be the majority of the time) -- I'd like to have it set to not boot at all when I'm making a short trip, or just moving my car from one parking space to another.

    The M3-ATX has 3 connections: power, ground, and ignition, all wired into quick disconnect terminals.

    I'm a complete novice with electricity, and I don't pretend to understand the majority of what I've already read about valet switches, but I'm always interested in learning, in fact, I'm interested in picking up some "Idiots Guide to Electronics" projects (like the ones Rat Shack used to sell) to learn a bit more after I complete this car pc project.

    Without a valet switch to do what I want to do, I presume the wiring scheme would look something like this:

    Battery -> In-Line Fuse -> 10 AWG -> Power wire on M3-ATX
    Ground Bolt In Trunk -> 10 AWG -> Ground Wire on M3-ATX
    Wire Tap to IGN Wire under steering wheel (Blk & Yellow Wire according to the haynes manual for my vehicle) -> Higher Gauge AWG (To Be Determined) -> IGN Wire on M3-ATX

    I understand, I may be suffering from delusions of grandeur, and that all of the above might be incorrect, but that's how I understand it thus far. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.... and with that... what type of switch I'll need (rocker?) and how to wire that into the setup to accomplish the aforementioned task. Thank you in advance!!!

    Well one option would be to get a 2 way switch and connect it along the signal wire going to the power supply. Pretty much if the switch is off the signal wire is cut therefore no power gets to the carpc to tell it to turn on. When switched to on, the signal wire is restored leaving power to signal the carpc power supply to turn on.

    That's what I did. Since I use the ignition wire from the radio harness, I just put in a simple lighted rocker switch on the dash so I can turn the computer off/on whenever I want.

    You don't need a huge wire for the ignition wire. Just use 14-16GA and you'll be fine.

    the answer is correct, but i feel that someone new to electronics might not get it--

    any standard switch will work for this-- don't worry about getting a "2-way switch". all the switch needs is to have a common terminal, and a normally open terminal, and to make sure that it is not a momentary switch.

    I also noticed a lot of these have 3 "prongs" for lack of a better term... Where would I look up info on correctly wiring one of these? Thank you!

    Yes that switch would work. I would assume the reason some have 3 prongs is because it has a light on it. Somone can correct me if im wrong but if there is no light odds are its going to have two prongs and you would just put that inline on the signal wire. If it has 3 prongs its the same hook up except now it has a prong for ground for that light to work.

    ^ yup-- the difference is that the switch requires a ground connection for the led to light up.(i've got 8 similar switches in my car).

    See, I said I knew I saw it somewhere. For what it's worth, I was looking for an on-off-on to do always on, always off and regular ignition control.
    The answer was here.

    However, I noticed one of the last posts was talking about switching from normal mode to always-on mode, would probably trigger the computer to shut down. Would there be an easy way to stop this from happening without using another switch? Perhaps a small capacitor on the line? It'd only delay shutdown by an extra couple seconds, correct? What value cap would work, should this method work at all?
