If you want to replace the gauges use an embedded system just for that, DO NOT run it off of your normal CarPC.

Take it from me, I've had my car rely on my PC to run... which was great until the PC stopped working driving down the highway. Don't rely on a standard PC for mission-critical operations. While a dashboard isn't technically mission-critical, I consider it fairly high up the list of priorities, well high enough to justify a separate, embedded, solid, well tested system.

    Hybrid Cluster

I agree with the embedded hardware for mission critical. My plan is to mix mechanical and digital. The mechanical gauge will not in any way rely on the digital screens.

I am actually modifying a 2011 Ford Fusion (non-hybrid) so using this gauge cluster as a base is easy.

Just throwing this out there, but how do you get a fuel level reading for your virtual dashboards?

Everything on my 2011 Ford is available on the CAN-bus. My current gauge cluster is all digital, the servo's move according to logic and input from the CAN-bus.

The new version will still read all necessary information from the same CAN-bus.

Thanks, but I am building a full computer system for my car, I will not be running any OEM hardware (so no CAN-bus). Actually my questions have been answered on the MegaSquirt forums, as I plan to run a MS for most of the gauges and engine control. My plan is to run a normal speedo, fuel level gauge, and tach as well as running a digital dash, so if the digital dash has a problem I can still drive the car. I will mount a LCD for the digital dash where the gauges would normally sit and mount the gauges on top of the dash, something like this.

Universal dash VENATOR is a hardware and software system to duplicate the dashboard of the car, in graphical form, the display CAR PC (or in a separate part of the main frontend). Data in the program of the microprocessor receives data unit. Data acquisition unit does not use the protocols CAN, K-line, OBD and the like, than fundamentally different from similar solutions. All staff sensors are connected directly to the unit. Unit interrogates sensors 50 ms period, and transmits the data in digital form on a CAR PC visualization program. An independent survey sensors can significantly increase the polling frequency, and use the system on the cars do not have the computer (Otto, diesel, electricity)

The program uses the platform Adobe AIR. This results in high-quality graphics and compatibility with the Windows platform and Android. As there are several styles of active elements of the user interface and the ability to use custom backgrounds (skins).

To date, the following functionality is available:
    1. Speed display
    2. Displays engine RPM
    3. The signals green and red zone speed engine called SHIFT (user adjustable)
    4. Total odometer (mileage initial user selectable)
    5. Daily resettable odometer (reset button)
    6. Service countdown (interval service path set by the user)
    7. Indication System voltage (calibrated by the user)
    8. The temperature display ICE (calibrated by the user)
    9. Indication of remaining fuel (calibrated by the user)
    10. Pilot lights
    11. Watch
    12. Custom Skins
    13. Day and night skin (when you turn on the light switch or timer)
    14. 4 arrow style (user selectable)

Communication between the collection unit and the CAR PC may be performed by interface COM over USB, RS232, Ethernet, Wi-Fi (depending on model block)

Where are those wide LCD displays and the Veator software available? I did a quick google search and could not find them.
That is EXACTLY what I want to put in my truck.
