Yeah it probably would be to taxing to run much more than pinball on the multi zone. But I wont be running all my stuff (video, tunning, games, GPS, ect.) at the same time.

Except for the one monitor connected to the on-board graphics, I am using a Diamond USB unit using the DisplayLink chip/firmware. Use at least version 195 and they work well.

I have a 3G internet stick. I purchased a 3G wireless router into which I plug my stick into, and it provides hotspot. This works well for me. It is fashioned such that I can easily remove it when we head out to the cottage (it won't penetrate outside the car very far.

I am using Matrix Orbital character LCD with 7 programmable buttons, connected via USB. Click the "build pics" link in my signature.

There are ways to make it work how you would like. But there is a plugin for OpenMobile that handles these little beauties. It's not yet available until the current re-write is ready. But I have tested it and it works a treat.

The thought had crossed my mind to use one of those, but I don't know what I would put on the screen. And I wanted to use a button on the stalk to control voice recognition. Dose OpenMobile have a voice recognition plugin?

As a matter of fact, there has been some work on voice control. But I cannot say at what state it's in as I haven't tested that part and the framework is under re-write. Ask the guys in the OM forum.

The Matrix Orbital that I have can have an extra switch or two wired to it. I use the display to show Date/Time/Temps. Almost any value that any plugin generates can be selected to be displayed on the LCD.

I went the Mi-fi route. As you know my install is has wayyyyyy to much and the router and access point was a headache for me. With the Mi-Fi, it connects up to five users, so the Car-Pc and 4 others. Thats enough for me. One thing I love about the Mi-Fi is that its on 24-7. I have it plugged into a cigarette lighter port, via one of those cheap $9.99 5V 1amp plugs, so it never dies. I did this so if the Car-Pc is not on, there is still connectablity. Im even considering giving the mulit-zone pc its own air card, and wiring it up so it can power up the screens and USB hubs on its own. That way it doesnt have to rely on the main pc at all. Of course this means I have to add extra wiring and put my screens on its own relay. As of now all the screens and other devices run off of one relay, and a lot of the stuff doesnt need to be on when mz is on.

I did a little more poking around and found this, it seems almost perfect for a carPC. I would like to avoid a WiFi connection if at all possible. I find WiFi causes far to many problems, it is much easier (and secure) to run a cable. WiFi is the enemy!!!

The enemy... LOL. Sure it's not as good as wired connections. Works for me for "visitors" (AKA Passengers) in my car that bring their portable devices. The modem you linked to sounds good. I don't leave mine powered 24/7. Mostly because the data plan may get used up faster, but mostly because I didn't password protect the Wifi to make life easier for "visitors" and as such, others could bleed my data plan dry while the car is sitting somewhere.

What you mean.... Wifi is secure.... you just set a heavy encryption protocol and your done.

Also, jmullan, as long as no one is accessing my MiFi, it does not send any information or data. As soon as someone connects to it, it grabs an IP address and automatically logs on.
