Also, jmullan, as long as no one is accessing my MiFi, it does not send any information or data. As soon as someone connects to it, it grabs an IP address and automatically logs on.
Ah yes. That was part of the point I was making for my setup. If I left it powered 24/7 without password access, then other folks could use my data (logging in without password getting free wifi) if they were close enough. I purposely leave it non-protected for when folks get into the car. When driving, it's hard for others to steal my signal.

Could I do better. Sure. folks only have to enter a wireless password once so why not put a password. I wouldn't leave it powered 24/7 anyway. My 3G router would use more juice than the MiFi and possibly run my battery down on these (now) colder winter nights.

Well I can understand that.... the long stupid keys are a b!+ch. Mine is hardwired into my head so its easy for me to bring up. Im even thinking of attaching it to my flip down screen.

Have you though of maybe a gateway server software? For work I use one called Antamedia Hotspot. Basically the user logs onto you access point, then when they go to the internet, they are redirected to a page that asks for a user name and password. Then for the main car pc, you setup its MAC address so that one computer can connect straight through. Its a pretty cool and light software. I have been using it for 4 years with no issues.

As for the WiFi, I don't really need to have a WiFi hotspot in the car, if I do decide to add it later it would be enabled/disabled by a toggle switch on the dash. I have been looking at the MegaSquirt stuff and decided that I should be able to achieve my goal of basically building my cars computer system from the ground up, with the ability to change engine parameters from the touch screens in the cabin. The only thing I haven't tracked down yet is a plugin that will interface with TunerStudio so I can control the tuning parameters from my FE.

Well its been awhile, I've been planning my system and focusing more on the ECU and gauges than the carPC end of things. But I have been thinking about using some kind of logic board to control things that would normally be controlled by a computer, like locks, a remote, windows, ext. has this been done before? What are some good low power logic boards?

I think most people use a fusion brain to achieve what you want with all the electric locks, windows, etc.

lol, "it's been a while"-- your last post was a week ago

though i agree-- there has been other devices like the fusion brain, but they just haven't caught on as much here. the popular one outside of this forum is the many variations of the arduino. i believe that either can be programmed to operate independantly of the pc, but can also be programmed to work with the pc if needed. ie-- if command says "input 1 goes high, activate output 2", it doesn't need the carpc. but if the command says "input 1 goes high, send signal to pc to change image, wait for image confirmation, then activate output 1" then it won't work..

I am planning on running some fairly simple logic. Input 1 controls output 1, but the computer can also control output 1. I am still figuring how many ins and outs I will need, but I expect I'm gonna need about 20 of each.

I will use an Arduino Mega for my logic board, that should give me plenty of I/O connections. I will use it to control a relay board that will handle all of the power and fuses.
