Planning my first install part ordering has begun

    Hi all

Been intrested in doing a car pc install for a while now and have recently started researching it more. Got ideas about what i want to be able to do with it so will probably be looking for some info when i get stuck. Anyway heres what I want

    Music
    Bluetooth Hands Free
    Navigation
    Internet
    Reverse Cam
    Forward looking Cam

Had a look at software and tried a few on my laptop and really like the look of Centrafuse. Only thing i think letting it down is the navigation as i've heard it aint that good and maps are old.

As for hardware so far im thinking the Asus E35M1-l Deluxe Mobo and M3-ATX PSU. Will likely go for a SSD aswell. Looking at a lilliput 7" or 8" touchscreen

Any comments on how this setup will work would be most appreciated

i breifly tried one of those boards when they first came out, and the BT module didn't work-- at the time, that was the only reason i wanted it, and the store i got it from didn't have anymore, so i just returned it.. from what i have found, it looks like it was a isolated issue..

otherwise, it looks like your of to a decent start-- just be sure to try to look up similar cars, or setups to get a better idea of what others might have done.

Centrafuse definitely is the best software out there, but I agree with you that the maps and navigation is a bit outdated.

I did have some issues with my laptop and centrafuse setup. It seemed that not everything worked together at the same time. The bluetooth would pick up calls sometimes but the voice couldn't pick the sound. I went through a lot of different hardware and it seemed things worked differently with different laptops that i tried.

I also got a lilliput 7inch touchscreen and it definitely has been working out great. There are great deals on ebay as well as the MP3Car store.

Feel free to post back with any questions, but be ready to spend some time troubleshooting issues (from my own experience).

Thanks for the replies. Software issues are my only real fear as i have very little experience with sorting software problems. Im ok on the hardware side as Im a marine electronics engineer so I deal with DC Voltage pc's on a daily basis along with other electronic equipment.

soundman98 thanks for the advice I don't plan to seriously start this until after christmas so ill definitely do some more digging and look at other peoples setups.

darkstaar4 Are you using centrafuse personally ? If so what are you using for navigation software and how are you integrating it into centrafuse?

    Thanks again for the replies

I do use centrafuse. I used the original nav software included with it but it is difficult to use and not always quick to update location. I then switched to iGuidance it is much more intuitive and quicker, but on a side note I usually revert to my google android phone's navigation software which far exceeds the ease of use and quickness than even iguidance.

personally, i use ride runner, so a little against cf and after all the whining i see from the guys that use cf, i really don't have a desire for it-- rr is 'leveling off' in the way that they are really not adding features, but correcting bugs..

while i have never tried cf, i think both cf and rr both offer some great solutions to incar interfaces. though i really only use it for audio files(the intent of the pc is medium capacity audio storage, and audio processing)

Thanks for the replies again guys

I tried centrafuse last night with pc navigator 11 (free version). I quite liked the pc nav software was pleased to be able to add it as an application on centrafuse but im a bit dissapointed that it can be made even more of a part of centrafuse.

I have tried ride runner along with a few other front ends. Personally I find RR a bit more complicated to set up and dont feel that it has that same finished feeling as centrafuse. However I think I want to like ride runner so ill probably try and play about with it a bit more.

    Again thanks for the replies

    cheers

For most people getting into Carputers Centrafuse looks very excinting and people fall in love with it because they can get it up and running very quickly.

The problem for me with Centrafuse is often when they update it they car nothing about backwards compatability so when they update many time you favorite plugin want work till the creator can update it and as has been seen some of these creator drop off and the plugin never gets updated.

I also use Riderunner and yes for new people to the hobby will have to do more homework to get it up and running but it is far more flexible and much better supported.

Put the time in to have a good play with Riderunner before you dish out the cash for centrafuse.

Thanks for the advice MagicMan. I downloaded Ride Runner and have been playing around with it the past few days and am starting to work out how to get it all looking good and working and must say Im more swayed towards RR now.

Also started looking into Fusion Brain. Really like the look of this little board and think its could be capable of doing some really cool things so will probably get one of those ordered up to have a play with.

Does anyone know if the fusion brain is available to buy from the UK or will i have to import it from the states ?

    Cheers

I recommend Centrafuse, yes their maps/gps sucks. BUT if you know where to look on the internet there is garminpc software thats discontinued for "purchase" but you can install that with the Ultimate Garmin Mobile PC plugin for centrafuse. This Garmin moble pc software uses the latest garmin map files. So if your able to "find" the software install it with the centrafuse plugin and "find" the maps. You will also like many have a kick *** gps on your carpc.
