    Newbie with a Chevy S-10

Good morning all. I've been thinking about putting in a car computer for a long time now. The factory radio just doesn't cut it any more.

So I've got a 2003 Chevy S-10 crew cab. I was thinking about putting using a "Direct Fit Double Din LCD Touch Screen for 2002-2004 S-10 Pickup" but then I noticed New Black Double Din Nano-ITX Carputer Enclosure.

Now I'm kinda stuck and would like some opinions on the two. Which one would you use and why? Yes I know one is a full on case and the other is not. Would the Double DIN Nano-ITX case fit properly in my S-10?

Also when I'm not listening to podcasts I usually have the AM radio on. So I would like to find a module to add on that will give AM radio. FM would be nice but not really needed. Can anyone point me to something like this?

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

just beware that the nano-itx enclosure will only fit nano-itx sized boards-- in many cases, there is a very limited market for these. they have started offering a mini-itx case--basically, they added a adapter ring that extended the depth of the case a couple of inches..

but neither are a really perfect solution. i know for sure that to fit a mini-itx board in your dash, you need a minimum of 12" of clearance in the dash-- i don't believe the s-10 has this(i put a radio in a 01 s-10 a while back-- i believe the dash is only 7-10" deep).. but that doesn't account for wire management, so it gets really cramped really quick..

the best bet is to look at nivanov's build thread(here)-- he used a variation of a nano-itx board. and then hopefully you can get a better idea of what is involved with that installation route, and if it is the best method for you.

I would highly recomment measuring the depth of your double din opening - most cars will not accomodate the new Mini-ITX case- they are not deep enough. Even if you think you can squeeze it in, remember that you'll need additional room for cable connectors as well.
If you use Nano-ITX enclosure and want to go the all-in-one route, take a look at Zotac Nano ad10+. It's less than 5"x5", relatively powerful and relatively cheap. I think you could potentially use the same build technique I did, just by replacing the unit i used with this Zotac and, maybe, avoid the external sound card.
As far as the radio goes, especially since you want AM, I'd get Directed HD with Mitch usb cables. It's basically an external car radio unit that you plug in to the Line-In, with a USB interface to control its functions

I've put in plenty of after market stereo's in all kinds of vehicles but haven't had the dash apart on this S-10 yet. Putting in a nano-itx would work just as well. I was actually thinking about using a raspberrypi computer if I can actually get one! They haven't shipped yet.

Basically what it comes down to is I would like to be able to put as much of this in the dash as possible. I really don't like the idea of running power, sound and video back and forth from the center console.

Do you have a link to your build?
