If you are going to do that, then I would consider a handheld running an app and the usb to canbus adapter to mimic the PCM.

More then a weekend project, but doable.

I think that just defeating the vin verify is the only thing you need to get full operation.

Like I said, the older units could have the vin verify defeated, but the new units require vin verify to operate and cannot be circumvented (I have tried).

Sniffing packets and storing them as files, then resending them via a PC is duck soup if you have the right stuff which is not hard to get.

Reducing all that to a reasonable size to fit should not be difficult.

heavymetal, if you are mentioning this to me that is my intent but for fear of hijacking this thread I only mentioned my plans to show the complexity. The project mentioned here will need to do all that I am doing and then some. As mentioned I already have much of the information I need and the hardware to do it. I just need to write a "sniffing" program to detect it. The ODBII stuff is reasonably standardized. I can pull the ID numbers from my manual to figure out what modules I need to capture code from and I can tweak my software in vehicle to figure out what I need to do to make things work. In the OP project unless he has an operational vehicle to play with while he is doing this it will be very difficult especially without the expertise. And no one is going to take on a project like this unless they are paid well or are bored and have lots of spare time on their hands. And for me with the proper hardware and everything spelled out I still expect to take dozens if not hundreds of hours to figure out all I want to get it to run right. I probably won't mess with it until I have an ARM board operational with a ODBII connection so I can try to program as I go...

For the OP if they fully use a CarPC with some of the components mentioned by others they should be able to get something up and running in a few hours instead of hundreds of hours. The radio is the easy part in his build and why use a factory radio in an older car that never had it anyhow? doesn't make sense when an aftermarket radio or a CarPC will have much clearer sound and much more capability. I want to do something similar with HVAC systems in my truck and in an older ODB I car but If I can't control it through CAN then I will either leave it alone or build a system using solenoids, linear actuators and whatever else I need to get it to work.

It is only as complex as someone makes it out to be.

You don't have to write software to sniff the packets, that already exists.

All you want to do is capture them anyway, not interpret them (the packets).

The only thing that is vin controlled is the radio and that does not verify the other modules.

All the other stuff is not, but may be controlled by the radio.

The OP does not need an operational vehicle as the radio can be reprogrammed (link provided).

I do not get into ? why someone wants to do a particular project, I provide information and technical direction on how to do it if I can.

I think it sounds kinda neat.

The bonus is developing a handheld or small vin verify defeat mechanism for transplanting vin controlled radios to other vehicles that aren't.

No worries, there is no Hijacking of threads. Just different information to look at. I am going to parallel plan this and look at doing a CarPC while I look into the G8 unit. The PC will only solve my radio problems and not the HVAC problems. I am looking into using the entire dash and wiring harness, connecting it to the E38 ECU, and running as little modules as I can. I really like the look of the Scosche setup for the HVAC controls...BUT will it control the HVAC? I appreciate all the info and I am trying to keep up with your suggestions and all the reading. Being as that I am soo new to this it is overwhelming. Can anyone give me an idea where I can start for the plans to run a CarPC? Google, and youtube have made it more confusing.

OK so I just heard back from Scosche, the tech said its a no go. The system connects with the vehicles data system. Back to square 1! That leaves the Metra system.

The operational vehicle is to pull the necessary CAN information while developing any necessary hardware/software. It is hard to pull it from a box sitting on a desk...

At this point the OP needs to find out if the HVAC system uses a separate brain. My expectation is that it does since you still need something to drive the motors etc. If the communications is via CAN then they will need to duplicate that environment. Plain and simple. If it is using a BCM to control everything, which most modern cars are, then it will become a very hard project without additional resources. If it is a very simple non-can control scheme from the radio and the scoshe hardware makes it work then great. If you can disable the VIN check then great. But getting the manual as listed above would be the best place to start looking. LOTS of great information in there if you know where to look.

My expectations from the research I have done however on other vehicles is that this system will likely be very difficult for a newbie to accomplish. But getting the manual for $10 and going from there is a great start before going any further.

You are right, the info needed is the vin verify.

The link that someone provided earlier to a remote control confirms it is not pcm controlled but has its' own "brain".

    My suggestion:

Send the radio out, get the vin verify turned off (link provided) for "bench testing".

Once you apply power, the HVAC screen should be operational.

If the HVAC system has power, see if it responds to control.

Also, newbie or not I figure if someone is knowledgeable enough to ask about what he needs, he is smart enough to understand the answer, especially in a technical based forum.

The OP is doing a dashboard transplant, so I assume he has some brains.

Hey guys, sorry about the way my posts show up. I am still in the probation period and I have to get my posts approved by the moderators. Which is a very cool idea, I have never seen it on the other forums. It cuts back on the BS! I dont have a running operating car. All of my stuff is going to come from a donor car. I will keep reading into the VIN stuff for the radio. I was wondering if adding in the BCM would help solve the problems?

Before this message thread I was unaware that the radio could have the Vin check removed.

I should not have assumed everything is CAN connected when I started my responses but if it does go through the BCM then the difficulty factor still applies. In MY vehicle I have tracked down most options going through the BCM at one point or another. Since the HVAC controls on my vehicle are knobs and sliders I am not sure what items I can control in MY system. But by the amount of electronics in the unit in my older GM vehicle I would be surprised if the HVAC system isn't tied into the CAN bus somewhere somehow on not only mine but on this newer GM vehicle. But again, looking at the manual will verify if this is a CAN controlled system or not.

To the OP, if this solves your problem, you owe me a sixer!
