It is a difficult task using the factory deck. Really i think that your only option is to use an FM Modulator, but like you mentioned, all of the ones I know of sound like crap.

It depends on how much the FM modulators costs. I have seen some which costs about 75 bucks and they are great. The ones from RadioShack and Bestbuy sucks.

You get what you paid for.

If it's stuck, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway

Unfortunately, the only way to listen using a stock head unit, is to use a FM modulator. FM modulators won't give you the same quality as a headphone connection to a AUX input on an aftermarket deck, because FM frequency response is more narrow than say, what you would get from CD. Frequencies audible to humans are 20Hz-20Khz. All of these frequencies are audible in a good home or car audio system. FM, on the other hand is like 50Hz-12Khz. The reason for this is bandwidth and power conservation for the transmitter.

    You need either this:

    or this:

Depending on which Model head unit you have in the BMW. Then you can just run a long 1/8" jack to the front and there you have it...
