The boss gave me a laptop with a broken LCD and I wondered what I could do with it. Came across the idea for a carputer, searched Google and here I am.

I was on myhtpc.net , I wanted to build an embedded video system. Someone post a link to this site saying that stuff like that is disscussed here. I found some great info.. Now I'm building a system for my auto and my home. I now found myself reading (and learning alot) this forum more that any other. Let me say thanks..

That somebody could be me. I am also there. I personally like myhtpc but it's better for home theater use rather than car use. Now I make my own interface

If it's stuck, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway

John here from SF Bay Area. Wanted to get an MP3 Player for the car and discovered MP3Car.com from the search engines. After a couple of days of reading I got the feeling that people know what they are doing here and signed up to ask questions and maybe even eventually give some advise from what I learn.

I'm on a crash course because I know nothing except how to build computers. Computer is done and now I need someone to help install after I get the Touch Screen.

I also found that I will spend apprx. $1500 at most for what would normally cost $4000 to do. That was reason enough to listen.

I had the idea to put a computer in my car ever since I first saw the Empeg mp3 player. I had a rough one running shortly after with a Matrix Orbital 40x4 display. and have finally upgraded to an in-dash 10.4" touchscreen.

It sucks because this carputer thing has become a kind of addiction! It has been sucking quite a bit of my money lately.

I found this forum through Mediaengine when I was searching for a good media front-end for my touchscreen setup.

I also think that the idea of a computer in a car is becoming less of a taboo type thing, as countless people have now asked me if I could install a carputer in their cars,, maybe the popularity of the whole thing is increasing the forum traffic too

Long time lurker (2+years I think), finally signed up.

I think one thing to consider is that a few years ago, when computers were still a new toy to most people computers were just computers, something to put in the family room and write papers or surf the internet. As they've become more and more common place and the whole performance aspect has become a moot point for many people, they've started to look at other ways to use their computers. Hence the rising interest in other uses such as carpcs or HTPCs, etc. Also helps that the prices have become so cheap too

Me personally I just started to run out of room to put all my computers (2 desktops and 1 server in my room, 1 in the bedroom, 1 in the kitchen, 1 HTPC for the family room, and 1 remote web server) so the next place was the car. Afterwards I'm thinking near the bath tub.
