Thread: Why all the newbies?

Ran into this forum a long time ago, but now im starting to get the urge to rig something up. Signed on to see if anyone was around the san antonio area, and to keep track of which posts ive read and havent read. There is just so much damned content here its hard to keep up. Maybe a post or two for things NOT to do, for zappinated hardware makes me frown. Anyways, thanks for the great forum. I already spend way too much time (all day in class, and lots of my waking hours) sifting through all this info. :}

i am on another forum where a member here posted his completed project (the one in the mitsu evo) and i saw it and now I have to have one.

So I found out where he got some info and here I am.

I had just ordered a whole carputer setup and was putting it altogether to stick into my dinosour truck when I found this forum. As things turned out, I had put together by myself, order wise, almost the optimal car sytem as found on this forum.

This would say to me that the idea has always been there with you guys beforehand...but a sudden hardware price drop caused a bunch of folks to get off the fence and jump into the pool. Plus, in addition to a lot of the components just now coming to a reasonable price range, some of your brethren have also put forth some excellent software.

The biggest obstical was a decent, in car 7" VGA display, that didn't cost more than the rest of the whole system put together. Only very, very recently has this been true, and you can see our pain looking at the LCD monitor many ordered directly from Hong Kong.

All in all, it is a confluence of interest, hardware availabity, and pricing just coming together right now.

You do understand that in five years from now, your niece will be asking if you payed $89.95 on sale, or $119 for all this at Best Buy, don't you?

I've been into computers since a wee lad, indeed, I spend most of my day in front of a computer-either for work or recreation. However, the idea of putting a computer in my car was foreign to me until just last week when I was at an audi club meet. One of the members was all telling me to check out mp3car.com and to look into a car puter. At first I was like, man thats all I need is a carputer to crash on me while I'm driving or really need muzak. But the more I thought about it, and after reading and checking out some of the rides here, the more obvious it became that that was the ONLY choice for a true car entertainment center (I was previously looking for an alpine dvd player). I just go crazy thinking how cool it would be to have wireless networking, vag com, dvds, mp3's, soo many limitless possibilities-in a car stereo! So now I'm parting out a computer + alpine pxa-h700 combo + touch screen combo and i'm totally thrilled!

Imagine a world of carputers, you pull up to a light, sync up with their wireless signal, trade mp3's, then race ;P

Technically, I'm a 'newbie' like the rest.. I have been into computers for a while (Since I stopped doing sports because the weather in Portland Oregon SUCKS ) and since my parents decided to finally (I am 17, its been like 18 months since I could have) let me get my license, and give me a car, I got into the car stuff. So I wanted to put something to run movies/GPS/MP3, and looked at the Sony offerings, and didn't like it, so I started Google'ing, and found MP3Car, and since then have gotten hooked and installed a car PC Oh, and right before I found MP3Car, one of my friends got hooked on the idea of a VIA EPIA M10000, and since I had the money to blow on one (And he didn’t – I work, he doesn’t) I decided then and there to buy one for future projects – How was I to know it would make it so a car PC was the next step? I’m sure glad as hell it did!

Atleast they gave you a car, mate. ive had my car for a while, and still cant afford such toys currently! Dont gripe for what you have, youll miss it when its gone :}

I had a Koss mp3 deck previouisly...its sheer crappyiness made me want to look at different options.
