mugu - I'm not really complaining.. I just wish they would let me get my license!!! I mean ****, I have a decent car, being it was free it is great, and I have a cool computer in it (Check link in signature) but I can't drive it much - Only with parents in it... Soon, I will have license... Like 4 weeks, I am making the appointment tomorrow after school, but Oregon is slow as hell and takes 4-6 weeks for practical test…

Man. you have a car, and a carputer, but no license? I had my plastic a few years before I got my car. And i didnt have access to any car either, total bummer. Figured i get it before my parents ran off to another country. In louisiana (where i got mine) i went in, took the written, drove around, made three left turns and was done. Took maybe, 45 minutes. bummer about your facist state. Good luck on the test!
Remember, never drink and drive! Oh, and feel free to give to the "feed the mugu foundation". =P

All in all, it is a confluence of interest, hardware availabity, and pricing just coming together right now.
That about sums it perfectly for me too.

This site was recommended by a friend who has been following my progress and providing feedback and fresh ideas for my project. Here’s a small part of the story.

I have been talking about installing a computer in my car for years. When I first considered it, the "art" was in its early stages. I did not have the energy or interest in building a system from A to Z. I had a CV1000 in my car with some mods. (I.e.-Video, ext port form MP3). For a few years this was good enough. As packaged multimedia became popular I began to look for something that was not subject to the “my buddy’s got one of those only his is better” comments that I truly despise. So I started looking into a car PC again. This time more products have been developed to make life easier. Then one day I got sick of just talking and ripped out my Alpine system. This gave me incentive to do something.

I had an old Compaq 1200 laptop in the garage that I decided to use. I took my dremel tool and cut the lower case in half. At this point I was committed. The screen for the 1200 was 13.3 TFT. I needed a place to put it. The only place this monster would fit was in the center of the dash. I would have to get rid of the A/C controls. So I purchased a Single Board Computer from Z-World, model BL2100. This SBC had enough digital and analog I/O to allow me to control the A/C System and other systems as needed. I then added relays and SOVs to the system to control the A/C fan, Compressor, and Vacuum actuators. The Hot/Cold selection is handled by a custom RC servo application that uses analog voltage to PWM to determine the position of the damper that switches between the evaporator and heater core. The SBC also times the Shut-Down for my USB Hub (Based on Battery Voltage), USB sound card (60 seconds after leaving the car), Router(Based on Battery Voltage), and computer (3 hour timer or Battery voltage drops below 11 volts). The BL2100 is a good SBC because it can run as a HTML server. With custom programming it can be accessed with a web browser or any other front-end program that can use HTML. Currently I am using a package from micro commander. They sell a SBC kernel and graphical front-end that eliminates the programming hassle. Unfortunately it is not very flexible for a mobile application. It has very small controls and does not seem to interface with windows allowing customization. The audio installation went very smooth with few snags. The automation part has been a little trying. The most difficult part is trying to make the controls and shut-downs intuitive to your personal habits. I plan to LT1 Edit on my PC to change the engine parameters when needed. I will use Auto-Tap to monitor engine functions real time. I am also planning to add an accelerometer to the SBC analog input. This will provide performance feedback for the changes to the engine management computer.

My hope is that participation in this forum will prevent me from re-inventing things that have been done and documented. I am planning to set up a website in the near future to share system diagrams, part lists, and other project data.

Hey I'm a newbie, too. I accidently found this site while googeling for information about touchscreens for my car (Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero Sport).
I found interest to the Carputer subject about one year ago, when a friend built his a pc in his car (check his car out it's great: www.elchmedia.de.vu).
Now i'll soon start building my car and want to collect more information here!
