Cool Wanting to build an MP3 Player for Jeep

    Greetings all,

Wanted to see if I can get some help from the experts. Little back ground on me first - I can build PC from scratch and I am good at it, but this is a new area I am interested in. Question is --> I am tired of the Radio and CD player in my Jeep and MP3 players do not hold enough songs. So I want to build my own. Where do I start and can someone point me in the right directions? I want to have a small screen (touch prefered) that can hid away. I still want to have the Radio/CD player as well. But I want a PC that can store large amounts of Mp3's on a hard drive to play through the system, but small enough to hide in a Jeep. Being that this is a site of experts can you please advise me on a start and products that have been proven?

    Thanks

    Greg

you can keep radio and cd playing on your head unit, does it have aux input? if so run your soundcard into that.

you need to do a lot of reading but to get you started:

look into via epia M10000 nehemiah for the mobo ($150)

Use a laptop hard drive if possible.

If you have an aftermarket stereo system you can run RCA from your PC to your amp. Otherwise you'll need to look into doing like bodgy says and run to an aux in on your head unit.

smallest screens worth using are 7" unless you want a simple character LCD

Exclamation Not an expert but . . .

I'm not an expert, but I am putting a PC in my car. Most of the parts are on order, and I should be done by Christmas.

Anyway, the best advice I can offer is to look hard at what you really want this CarPC to do.

There are a million different options/combinations of hardware to achieve different ends with a PC in a car. It all depends on how much you want to spend, and what you want to get out of it.

By the time I am done with my project, I will have easily over $1500 in it. A friend looked at me and said "why didn't you buy a laptop for that less than that, and just plug it into the AUX input of your car stereo? Then when you get done in the car, you still have a laptop."

Another friend asked "why didn't you just buy an MP3 capable head unit for your car? They're only about $250, and you can burn hundreds of MP3's on each CDR. You could have your entire music collection on less than 10 CDR's. If you really wanted to get silly, just put an MP3 capable changer in the back too for another $300. That way you get all the MP3's and have about $900 in your pocket."

What I'm getting at is that there are a lot of easier cheaper ways to get MP3's into your car. If that's all you're looking for, I would say go with one of them.

If you really want a PC in your car, then there are a couple other choices:

Do you go with a mini-ITX system?
Pros: small, low power, low heat, low noise
Cons: costs more than conventional PC, less powerful that conventional PC

Do you go with a conventional PC?
Pros: cheaper, easy to find good parts, you may already own what you need
Cons: SIZE (where are you going to put it?), heat, power consumption, noise (fans)

All those CONS can be overcome, but it's a matter of what you want and what you want to spend.

    I hope that helps,
    Tom
