Heh, my first thread and I'm already replying to it. Another issue: subs. I see a lot of problems stemming from having a computer in the trunk with a powered subwoofer sitting next to it. Again any suggestions/stories are appreciated.

Hey everyone, I just signed up for the forums today and had no idea there is so much interest in this stuff. I'm trying to decide whether this is something I'd like to get into. . .
In any case, I live in Missouri, which for the uninformed, is a very humid place that reaches 100 in the summer and dips below 0 in the winter. I am worried anything I try to do will be killed by such extreme temperatures. Can anyone shed some light on this situation?
Thanks in advance for any relevant info or experiences.

As long as you have a CPU fan running, there's little chance of losing any hardware even on the hottest days. My first system was rock solid and the only temperature related problem was that the LCD wouldn't come on when it was cold. My current system has a problem where if it's too cold, the video card acts up and will display jibberish. When it's hot, my amp overheats easily. Problems I haven't spent much time working on.
And the general consensus is that there is no problem running a sub next to your computer.
both topics have been covered in detail.
At least for the cold issue, if you have trouble booting it could be the power supply or the drive. as the car warms up it will boot properly. Also cold can make the LCD sluggish also.
Good luck

i use to live in the gulf (saudi arabia, bahrain, kuwait, dubai) for 12 years before settling down to australia so i think i know what you mean by extreme temperatures. i've been carputing since 1999 through this extreme weather conditions and i can tell you that computer run fine if you have fans in proper places. most components has a maximum boiling point of 70 deg (i'm talking about celcius) and you won't be staying in the car if the temp. inside is 40 deg anyway. as long as the computer is not directly under the sun it should be fine. the computer behaves strangely like screen freezing up, etc. when it reaches a certain temp. so by this time you will decide to turn your computer off anyway so then unknowingly you kept it from getting fried.Originally Posted by mduck
basic rule of thumb: if it is hot and humid, vents and fans for huge volume of airflow are a must, if it is hot dry, shaded enclosure is ideal. it also helps to separate motherboard, psu, and hdds in separate housing. good luck.
btw, subs and computer can together would be fine except when you put it in the same enclosure, funny as you'll say but one of the guys from the forum thought of doing that. the huge magnet of the sub plus vibration will damage your hdd.
