    Software essentials for carputer?

I have a Xenarc 7" Touchscreen and the Epia m10000. THis is what I have installed or plan to install:

    WinXP
    VirusScan
    WinDVD
    GPS software
    iTunes

    Any other suggestions?

honestly, why the virus software? I see no need since 99% of the time your carputer will not be connected to the internet.

Watered down Norton AV... I have it. Linked to the wi-fi, when I pull into the driveway, it automatically downloads updates! Just get rid of the manual scan and run the auto protect only.

For those that have wi-fi autolinks, I can see the necessity of having it. For others who connect now and then for updates, I really don't see the point. Enough effort goes into building these things that a hardcopy backup of the software core (Ghost) would be called for, leaving you to feel free to NOT install the extra overhead-causing AV junk.

I work at a university. The moment I drive on campus, im connected wirelessly. While at my parking deck, i'd be doing my networking for new mp3s and what not. You never know, so why not?

Why not get a Front End software like Media Engine? It seems to do most of what you want in a sweet graphicle display?

I dont build anything anymore without installing media player classic via Real alternative and Quicktime alternative. If you need em, pm me, they are hard to come by on the net sometimes (lots of dead links) they will play darn near anything you throw at it. I like some of the office features too, like excel and powerpoint. Might be overkill, but I like the be ready idea too. My $.02
