newbies bring it on themselves by posting with thread title such as "king of newbies" or "n00b question"...that in itself gets people ready to flame them

    Phase 1: steal underpants
    phase 3: profit!

I agree....just like the underpants gnomes, you need a phase 2. I am also tired of the repetitous questions, especially those that will get peoples panties in a bunch, like which LCD is better, but hey, they are newbies, and they may fade away or go on to be the next post-whore. You just never know!

Plus, i do have a soft spot for my fellow Dr Pepper peoples

bottom line is, if you're ALREADY eating ramen noodles, how are you financing this carputer project? surplus amounts from student loans?

seriously, the first thing i think you gotta get is a ballpark idea of 1) what you want, 2) what you are willing to pay (total), and 3) how to get 1 & 2 to "meet in the middle".

When I started looking into this, I (ignorantly) was hoping to get a carputer set up for maybe about $300 tops. Then I found out that if you want a VGA-capable screen, you're probably looking at at least ~$250 just for that.

I have a suggestion. Instead of postwhoring and flaming, how about you help him out.

Now hear me out before you start flaming me. I know I'm a n00b on this forum but I'm not stupid nor am I a troll....

You can search for info, but as most of you have stated most n00b's don't know what they are looking for much less what they want. But that isn't all true.. Everyone knows what they want, (mp3, GPS, wifi, etc) they just don't know the way to get there.

You can search for months (and trust me I have.. I'm a professional lurker) and never find a definitive answer to your question. The pure basics of a machine aren't covered anywhere (a sticky) where a noob can easily see it. That would alleviate the majority of BS newbie posts contained in this section and also cut down on the BS posts by the regulars/seniors. It would also alleviate the end user buying junk equipment they may feel will do the job (or look better) but instead just ends up causing them to spend more money buying the right equipment. (Isn't that what it's all about??)

In the military we are taught to give a solution when you identify a problem so here are my solutions:

#1 Outline basic terms for components and sticky it. (This would cut down on users asking very generalized questions since they can search for terms that would yield better results.)

*EDIT* Let me clarify that. I mean basic as in the right type mobo, screen, PS..

#2 and/or create a product registry so users can provide feedback for items they have used. (Example: http://www.rangerpowersports.com/review/ )

#3 Work on the customer service skills. I'm sure the admin would love to see hits/users on this site go up. The more users he gets, the more enticing the site is to advertisers and the media , the more money he gets from advertisers and more exposure, the more benefits the users get from the money and exposure the admin receives from the advertisers. That will never happen when 96% of people on this site are too far up on their high horse to remember what it was like when they started out and how hard it was to piece everything together.. (And I don't want to hear about how you were all pro's.. I still see posts about using HU's with their car pc or running straight to the amp(s).. and that's from people with a few more digits in their post count then I.)

    BTW..
i honestly dont think someone is going to sit down and write a reply containing all the subtleties of building and installing a carputer...
PM them to me, I can handle the audio portion but I am lacking in the computer dept....and THE N00B (me) will put them together so they can be integrated into the site or stickied on the forums since all of you can't be bothered to do that.

So or for a clue and support this site!

now, i only skimmed your post, but there is a lot that you can do without knowing specifics about the project.

what do you want to do with the computer? i.e. mp3 only, gps, dvd,
with or without a head unit?
what about interface? touchscreen, character lcd w/ buttons?
    power supply? dc-dc or ac-dc?

you really should know what you want before you come and ask what you should do. everyone here will give you a different answer and you will get yourself nowhere.

believe me, i hate flaming people, but when you dont know what you want... how can you ask for help on it. i spent a good 6 months reading and learning before i even signed up for an account. im not asking everyone to do that, just be a bit knowlegable before you come and ask for help.

also, people have to understand that this project doenst have an instant pay-off. you dont go to the computer store and but a car mp3 player and drop it in place... and boom... you have music. sorry, it doenst work that way.

Yes, but sometimes even the best sheep in the heard needs to be pointed in the right direction.

What I am getting at is there are a lot of things you can do without having to know what kind of input device or what you want to use the carputer for ( as in an ITX instead of a full blown ATX MOBO would be a good start or going one step further and letting people know that if they use an AC PS with an inverter they are just reconverting the current. Those things can be posted and dumbed down so the average user gets a general understanding of the parts associated with a project like this instead of 15 people replying with nothing but .

Maybe it's that over the past month that I have been lurking around the newbie forum I see the same replies no matter what input people give. I have seen recent posts where people say their vehicle make, amount of space, what they want to do, that they want a screen and so on.. ( a lot of info that helps point them in a good direction for products..) and the only reply they get is and read THEN ask more questions.

It just seems that users on this site have an aversion not to share their knowledge on basic topics, and chime in only when terms like PCB and capacitor for the lilliput get thrown around..

I'll give you another example.. Nowhere within easy viewing on this site can you find a reccomendation for a basic mobo that will play mp3's and dvd's with the capability for expansion to GPS or wifi later on. (Because we all know you can put your mp3's on the HD or a disk and play it off the dvd player) You guys "the experts" don't have a collective reccomendation on which mobo works best for "the basics" or stands up to the heat or wear and tear. Also, what processor is optimal for running that type of hardware and it's supporting software. Maybe something that might help more is sticking a note at the top to include:

    Vehicle make/model/year
    optimal location/preferred space consumed
preferred display device (HU, LCD text, or LCD VGA)
    preferred addons (DVD/MP3/cell phone dialing)

the thing that set me off was the fact he sked for a detailed blueprint on how to build one. We are all adults here... even if your not you old enough to know that the best education is from first hand. We could go round and round about costomer service and not to flame the newbies but the fact is people that have been around the forums for the pass year have all seen these questions and are tired of answering them...

the answers are in the search you just have to bloody look

How hard can it be to figure things out??? ok he goes to college ,likes to party and would like to look cool in his dream car. But you must put your heart into it. Buying stuff that others point out for you may not be the way to do that. And it may not be the best way for you and your needs for your car. Start with your plan and what you want. Then go for the mother board. Things for that mother board will prob change, depending on what you want and what you can do. Even the mother board might.

    1. Idea
    2. what makes the idea work
    3. researching idea and plan to work
    4. trial and error
    5. final product
Creat your hypothesis test it or read up on it then come to a conclusion.
    Think ...............
