Hey guys,
After a lot of surfing around here ( this site is GREAT ! ) i got a setup which is semi final. Because many people here have a lot more electronic knowledge them me ( which is 0,00001 ;-) ) I wanted to have the setup checked before actually implementing it
Car
Renault Laguna 1.9 CDI Y2003
Screen
7" lilliput Touch ( there is no other ;-) ) [ INSTALLED ]
but when looking at my first install test Pictures ( do yourself a favour and take the pics with _web in the name, the others might be rather big and slow ;-) ) I think I might need something to get less reflection. Still looking for a solution on that.
Audio
FM stereo modulator ( the kit, not the boxed one)
http://www.veronica.co.uk/50mwsb.htm
*** This is because I do not have a input on my radio , don't wanna loose the whole steering control + hud LCD display + phone car kit and don't have funds for a decent $350+ car stereo which can be installed in my car to replace the current one without loosing functionality
Computer
EPIA-M10000
512MB Ram
PCI 802.11G pci Wifi
bluetooth dongle
HDD: Not sure yet, I have a 20Gb notebook hd lying here somewhere and a 120gb ATA.. don't know if the normal disk can stand the shocking but the 20GB notebook drive is kinda,.. wel kinda small ;-)..
GPS: This is where i might need some help, I've been reading about a lot of trouble with gps on USB so I am doubting if I really wanna try this or just go for a serial one. Is there a big speed difference or power difference when not using a USB one ? I was thinking about the Fortuna serial GPS but after some testing i found out I have the nice protective windshield where an ipaq with a navman ( with which i tested) never gets ANY sattelites. Since the carputer will be in the trunk and I didn't get a chance to test the rear windows yet I can't be sure if this one will work there.
Power
Since I would like to survive cranking ( and after measuring I noticed my engine really DOES crank ;-) (my sigaret lighter voltage drops to 0,67 volt during "car boot" ;-) ) I will go for the Opus 90W I think this should be enough for my setup. Lilliput is not powered from the PSU so that should not a problem ( I think )
Software:
Win XP pro ( can join in my domain and have auto backup of data when I drive up the parking in front of my house before the computer shuts down.), MediaCar and destinator for GPS probably
What do you think ? Is this setup ok or did I forgot something ?
Screen install:
How it (almost) was: ( only thought about taking pictures when radio was unmounted ;-) )

In Progress :

Almost done:

And then... and then nothing cause my digicam battery was dead ;-).. i'll update later when I have pics of the current install..
Probably gonna try and get the screen deeper in ( move radio out) so it can be stealthed by closing the radio cover. Anyway, I think it is very clear how bad it reflects light and images so I'll have to try some filter or so.
Regards,
Noctris

Wow those were big pictures. The setup looks fine but I am not sure about your comments regarding USB GPS - my Delou Routis works just fine. The Renault uses a metalized film in the windscreen so will block the GPS if you dashmount it - there is usually a 2-3 inch band at the top that is clear or use a rear window.
FM modulators are never a good solution as they get interferance from radio stations and constantly need retuning - try a simple cassette adaptor if you radio doesn't have (or cannot be modified for) aux input. Far more satisfactory on a long journey.
Standard HDDs are fine but ALWAYS MOUNT THEM HORIZONTALLY and never vertically. They can stand anything your car's suspension can survive (not true for optical disks which can skip badly unless shock mounted - depending upon the model).
OPUS 90 will be fine - you probbaly could get away with a 70 if you wish.
What about radio (DAB/XM/FM)?

Highres only ;-)
Anyway, The gps would indeed go in the rear window so this should take care of the metal film in my windshield.
The power is more out of safety.. If i decide to throw in another Mobo with more power I don't feel like buying an opus then after spending the money on the 70 watt psu. I went for the 150 btw cause chances are that I will upgrade to a low profile P4 some day anyway ;-)
The problem with the radio is that it has only a cd slot and radio reception and does not have an aux. Because I currently cannot convince my girlfriend that all of this has a geniune purposes ;-) so for now I am afraid that I'll have to live with an fm modulator ( so what is the use of rippinng my cd collection in Lossless WMA file right)
The horizontal mounting of the hdd will be the biggest problem ( more in space and "howto" ) But i'll have to fix it. Do slower disks ( 5200 ) give less chance on crashing then the new 7200 or are you pretty safe as long as you keep it horizontal.
This weekend I've been looking as of where to install the whole damn thing and the only little problem that seems to stay is where to stuff the wires that go too the opus and more important, how thick do these wires have to be to power an opus 150 ? is 10cm² enough ?
Thanks
