another USB slot dvd thread!

so after hours on

i've come to the conclusion that
THERE ARE NO USB SLIM SLOT DVD ROMS

so as a solution regular IDE slot dvds were suggested and adapters changing ide to ide to usb was required.

could one of you gurus could kindly summarize the solutions to connecting a SLIM SLOT DVD. since the dvd is located for me in the front of the car, is there a available 5v line? is there any alternative through a usb or firewire cable?

also im running about 4 devices on my mobo, is that going to interfere with each other? gps/wireless/keyboard/audio. if so could you kindly suggest a good usb power hub and how to connect it within the car?

I currently have 2 USB hubs in the front and have a usb2.0 3m belkin cable going from the back to the front for each.

As for the slim dvd drive, i have bought a laptop drive, a laptop - IDE adapter and then an IDE - USB adapter and plugged it into one of the hubs. Works perfectly.

As for power both the hubs and laptop drives use 5V so just send 2 wires from the back, +5v and Ground from your power supply and that'll power any USB/laptop devices u wanna put in the front.

this is a pretty stupid question but where are / could you grab the 5v from?

where would be convient i guess?

u can cut the red wire from any power connector from the power supply, bullet it back together into a single female bullet and then connect up the wire going to the front with a male bullet. u'll need to do the same with GND.

I just did it from one of the hard disk power connectors, try it on one which isnt being used.

then you soldered the 5v and GND to the dvd? which part? the ide part?

no no no, dont solder, just find an old power supply and take off the floppy connector, than wire the 5v and gnd onto there. Assuming your dvd drive takes a floppy connector, which if it has a laptop optical drive - IDE adapter, it will.

you mean those small little 4 or 5 pin power connectors from any desktop pc battery?

you just cram in the GRN and 5v? and they stay?

also how are you powering your USB hubs same method?

further question: i plan on gettin the opus battery but i tend to leave my car for long periods of time. and apparently it still drains the battery slightly when the car is off? is there a way around this or just disconnect the whole thing entirely?

Mind you that's for a dual-format DVD burner. Might be overkill for what you want.
You can also get bare DVD/CDRW plus the adapter and enclosure and make your own.

The guts of an exrternal USB enclosure would be what you need to connect any drive to USB. Most of them are USB 2.0 now, as well. I'd imagine that the enclosure for a slim drive would have the slim-style IDE connector. If not, you'd need the mini-IDE to standard IDE adapter as well. Since I haven't actually had one of those sexy slim enclosures, I couldn't tell you.

its basically the same thing as what we are trying to do. 300 for that is over kill since 99% of the time i know i wont be burning anything in my car when i have a desktop at home.

now where can i get those laptop to ide adapters. i found an plentiful amount of the ide to USB ones.
