Big noob question...can regular desktops work?

I couldnt find what I read before but it had the cons of putting a regular desktop in a car. size doesnt matter to me, and i can get a p4, 2.4 ghz, 512 mb memory, 80gb hd on ebay for 350 shipped. What's the downside to this.

well... size, but not in your case. And power consumption, will a full blown powerful desktop you will need a decent invertor and normal PSU, with less specs you can start to consider DC-DC, even if they are more expensive.
Mods: 18" Boss rims,Twin custom stainless exhaust, cold air induction.
Sound: Pioneer 7400 HU & 6x9's,12" Vibe Sub,600W Kenwood amp.
CarPC: MicroATX, Inverter, WinTV, Lilliput 7", USB GPS

I'm going super easy/ghetto with this, so I'm gonna buy a good quality inverter that can power the computer. It will be hooked up to a second battery which is also in the trunk. Let me know of any other cons you guys can think of. Thanks!

The first thing I can think of is heat. It will be in the back of a hatchback (hatch has cover, windows tinted), but I know the machine will heat up pretty quickly right?

I dont [I]need a p4, i can get something lower. But i figured I might as well get a 2x faster computer for 1/2 the price of a decent mini computer.

Anything will work, its just how well they will work. There is a reason the minicomputers are 1/2 the speed for twice the price, they will work better.

    Thoughts on second battery

Do yourself a favor and put in an isolator for the second battery so the system never draws off of the main battery. This will make sure the car will always start in the event you forget to shut everything down or are using the PC without the engine running. The alternator will still charge the second battery with the isolator in.
