    Laptop Or Fullsize

Ok I've Been Searching Through These Forums For Most Of The Day And Just Haven't Been Able To Find What I'm Looking For...

I'm New To The Whole Idea Of Carputers, And Was Originally Going To Get That Pioneer AVIC-N1 For $2000, But Then Realized I Could Have A Computer Installed By Me For Less Money And It Would Be Able To Do Much More...

Ok My Question Was Would It Be Better And Cheaper To Run The System Off A Laptop Or Run It Off Desktop Components In A Custom Fabrication?

And What Kind Of Power Supply Setup Would I Need For Both?

Also Another Questions... What Is The Best Way To Have The Computer Components In The Trunk, But Have A DVD/CD Drive In The Front Accessible By The Driver?

Search harder my friend search harder

try check out the completed section this will give you the most insipration, but since we were all newbies at one stage,

a laptop presents interesting on / off switching requirements, a desktop is easier to mod and "stealth install"

as to pc in trunk, dvd up front, usb 2 or firewire is the way to do it, with some form of external power supply for the device either up front with it or remotely

and a word of advice get an Opus power supply or Mastero power supply if using a desktop dont try skimp on this

I prefer a LapTop... No need for Inverters and shutdown controllers or extra battery, very good hibernation and standby support built in, just configure right...

My laptop is under girlfriends seat and its easy to wire and give maintenace from there and no need for long cables...

I have old laptop but you can find good laptops reasonable price today...

I bought one external case for harddisk to USB 2.0 and i think it could be used for dvd-drive also, easy to hook up and grab to home when updating large media files...

Ok Think I'm Gonna Go With The Desktop Components...

What Are The Bare Minimum Components Necessary For A Desktop To Be Able To Run?

Yea It Would Probably Be Easier... But I Think I Can Get More HDD Space Cheaper With Desktop, And We Already Have A Wireless Network Setup At My House So Transferring Data To And From Would Be Easy With A NIC Card...

Is There Any Real Need To Have A Fast Processor In A Computer Like This Basically Used For Nav, DVD Play, MP3s, And Possibly CD Burning?

Yes, but you could always use en external USB 2 or Firewire harddisk which you could then unplug and connect to your desktop in your house for faster transfers.

    Laptops are easier.
Powering them up is a breeze. One desktop hard drive can eat more energy than a complete laptop system. Hibernation and shutdown support is easy, you also get a nice cheap LCD (if you can extend it of course).
I've done two laptop setups and have been happy with both of them. During my very first setup I was able to fit my entire gutted laptop system inside the dash in the place of the stereo.
About the HDD space - don't be sure sure. You can get an external USB 3.5" drive enclosure and use a desktop drive with a laptop. Even more - you can disconnect it and connect it to your home PC easilly for fast data transfers, then connect it back with no problems.

Question for guys with laptops.... how do you power back on from hibernation and or initial boot? Have you soldered into the laptop board itself.
I couldnt solve this problem mentally without soldering into a laptop (with all the fun that brings).
I install a desktop system (ok need to make smaller but thats easy enough). The main reason is it has the buttons easily accessable so you can run some cat5 through to a push button on the dash? comments?
