Trunk or glovebox

Trunk
+ Battery right beside (my car has the batt in the trunk)
+ Space (better ventilation)
+ Near amps for sound system
- need to be keep away from objects in the trunk
- slot cd drive in front = long wires
- long wires to the screen also
- Need to go in trunk to plug cf card or usb device (or make a usb plug in front)
- probably bounces more than the passenger compartment (because it's behind the rear wheels)

Glovebox
+ easy access while in drivers seat
+ less wires except for power from battery
- tight space
- no air because of enclosed space
- can't mount the HDD vertically

Is there a preferred place. I think the trunk will be better but I'm not too sure about all the wires to the front...

What do you suggest?

If under passenger seat is hight enought (have room), you can install it down there.

What type of car is it going in? I am mounting mine under my front dash... on the Tranny hump... but I'm in a 65 Stang... soooo

Obviously it is highly dependent on the car, but I'd vote for the trunk. The cable runs are usually not that hard to deal with and you can end up with a fairly clean install. I ran USB up to the front of my car (see my sig for a link to my carputer) to deal with plug-and-play devices.

I'd say the trunk. Custom make a case so you don't have to worry about damage. The battery being in the trunk is a good advantage. Less of power cable will be needed.

You're worry about cables running to the front. Well let's take a look at that. (Plus under the carpet, they won't be seen.)

VGA cable
USB cable (run this into a USB hub. Power wires can be zip-tied to the USB cable. Get your 12VDC or 5VDC off of a Molex connector. If it's 12VDC then this can power your screen too.)
2nd USB cable for your DVD (same with the power from above. This way it is a dedicated line going to the computer).

That's it. Touchscreen, keyboard, mouse, and any other USB1.1 devices plug into the hub. Put the hub under the seat. Just remember USB2.0 and UBS1.1 devices won't operate correctly on the hub. The USB2.0 devices will run at 1.1 speed (hence the reason for the dedicated line for the DVD).

i'm curious as a noob, how do you know the diff, and which would be better and for what (12v vs 5v).

I think he meant he wants to power the screen (yellow 12V) and the slim DVD (red 5V) on the molex connector.

YOu lucky sod! a merc Kompressor and a nice space for a screen!

Was dreaming and looking at cheap 230komp CLKs the other day. If i had £8-10k to blow on an old seocnd hand car that would cost me lot to run then i can jsut see myself drivng round in a CLK

back to your Q:

i don't think anyone else mentioned this but close to your amps is a definite big plus as you don'tt want long interconnects to your amp and yeah the short power wires are good too. Under seat is good for saving space and keeping from damage but a good custom case in the boot will only take up a few inches and i am pretty sure that you have a lot of boots space. I was gonna mount mine under the seat until is saw the large beam that passes in the way and i don't want to here the fan running. Go for the boot! You might want to put your gloves int he glove box and i am one who wants to keep the everyday functionality of his car the same - ie no loss of useful cubby holes or major loss of boot space.

Whoa, D! I did some research on this one click here. Basically if you can find a multi-TT hub you can sucessfully integrate 1.1 devices into the 2.0 stream so you can integrate them, that is if your mobo is 2.0! Next item to explore is which mobo's support mixing 1.1/2.0 since it's the same hub for all.
