Welcome! As far as USB cables go I believe the max is @ 15 ft. You should not have any problems reaching anywhere in the M3 within that range. I would recommend a usb hub upfront to save on the runs to the rear of the car though!
First post here and pretty new to carputers - hi all... Lurked for a few weeks and searched through the archives.
The car is an M3 Convertible... I'm thinking as it's going to be bright inside the car with the roof down I need a decent touchscreen. Considering the Xenarc?
Other Hardware:
Travla C134 - presume the PCI slot on the mobo will be useless with case
512Mb PC2700 LP
Via EPIA M10000
Opus 12v DC-DC 150w
Notebook Hard disk and slimline DVD
I'm doing away with the head unit and CD changer. between the carputer and amp I'm looking to get a Audigy NX.
What special cables do I need? RCA to the mini jack plugs? Any others for the building of the 'puter? Just want to make sure when I place an order I haven't missed anything...
How long can I have a USB cable as the carputer will be down the front of the car and the audigy at the back near the amp.
It's going to be used for mp3, DVD playback, Sat Nav, etc... usual stuff...
Hopefully someone will be able to help me and offer guidance!

You can actually go much further than 15 feet; I believe that the rule is 6 cables, assuming each is an "active" cable; active cables act as a usb hub of sorts, where passive cables (the ones you get from wal-mart or officemax, etc.) act solely as extensions. even with passive, you should get at least 25-30 feet, probably even further; usb is very similar to cat 5 in a lot of ways...I have a camaro and have many usb runs from back to front with with joints in between with no trouble at all...since I'm a bit longer than the m3, I think you should have no trouble making these runs...a word of advice though: being a little extra cautious, I taped my usb joints (from extension to extension) with electrical tape when I ran them under the carpet. I dont know if the metal outer casing of the usb extension will react badly to the metal of the body, so I figured I'd rather be safe than sorry, plus it keeps the cables from coming undone under the carpet...Originally Posted by GruvThang
but back to the original question, I have a 20 foot run in my car and have had no trouble with it...
I am not trying to flame, just trying to give out the accurate information.
I was wrong, I did some research and found this, so it is possiible to go longer. If the device is not USB powered you should not have too much to worry about the specs but if it is USB powered you could run into delay, data loss, and voltage loss.
But the specs are:
USB 1.1 cable can be up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length between active repeaters, with a max of 5 active repeaters(or hubs) so about 50 feet max
USB 2.0 cable can be up to 15 feet (5 meters) in length between active repeaters, with a max of 5 active repeaters(or hubs) so about 75 feet max
Of course, real world applications will vary, I myself have a USB 1.1 printer hooked to a 15 foot cable (not in the car LOL) with no problems for over a year.
