don't let a day go by without finding some wonder in it...
I went with slackware because it is the easiest to pick what I wanted. I just installed their "A" disk set and an mp3 player and went from there.
do any of you know of any good sources of info on linux commands?
http://www.linux.org/docs/index.html is a good starting point
www.linuxquestions.org is a good place.
O'reilly publishes a lot of good books and references.

Use the "man" or "info" online help systems. Applications will most likely install manual entries for use with the man or info help systems. Also, when issuing a command in linux, issue the --help argument if you need more information on the command and it's arguments. That is one good thing about linux, all the help you need is right there.
gentoo would probably make for a nice car system with some time dedicated to building it right..

no no no DEBIAN
apt-get is so beautiful. no searching for 43059435 RPMs because of dependencies. apt-get will downlaod every dependency the program needs automatically. Gento I heard has the new "portage" technology which is supposed to be like apt-get if i'm not mistaken. so that might be a good one too.
CarPC install is starting to come along again...
gentoo's portage is wonderful.. one line command to get what you want and all the dependencies (emerge xine), plus easy to see what programs on your system have updates available (emerge sync, emerge -u -p world) etc.. I haven't used apt-get to compare it to, but I love portage.. (trying not to hijack this thread into a distro war![]()

Slackware if you want a BSD like system. If you're using an EPIA board have a look at some of the mini distros aimed at the mini-itx boards - they come with all the VIA drivers built in though adding the for the Mini-ITX is a breeze.
As they say don't go for bloat, especially Red Hat who are just a commercial company anyway who charge double the price of Windows server for their commercial distribution!
Have a search for HeadUnit int he software dev forum - for a media-car like interface on Linux
