No dash hacked. Can be returned to stock in a matter of hours.

hardest part is moving the climate control, because it is too long to fit where I've put it. You have to 'break' it in two.

the decision to do it wasn't hard, it was just a matter of doing it in such a way that didn't destroy anything.

still need to make some improvements, but it works OK for now.

Next step is to change to boot install.

check my website for the history so far. (must upgrade/update that too)

Kweul!! I just took a gander at our install.. Pretty clever!! I also like to keep the console stock- that's why the monitor stayed on that mount instead of in the dash. Also I don't relish the idea of looking down when I am traveling over 160KPH. I was looking at installing a SFF building a equipment shelf under the trunk deck oops (boot).

here's a guy who's done the equiptment shelf under the trunk

I want mine to be a lot slimmer. That's why I am taking out the compaq SFF (has a non standard PSU so can't use an opus) and replacing it with a microATX board in a plexi case which I am putting together.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, I just remembered that I started a thread here. Glad to see there are way more posts now. Enforcer, that's some great work relocating the climate control unit down to the sunglass holder area. How hard is it?

Are you also a member of bimmerforums, by any chance? There's a guy there who did the exact same thing!

It's a pain in the proverbial. You have to split it apart and separate the two boards. Because it's too long to fit. I hope to have a full tutorial on my website in the future. Started taking the photos now, so keep em peeled.

I'm not really a participating member over there. I have an account but rarely go there, but I have seen the other guys thread.

Damn, that reply was fast. Am looking forward to seeing your tutorial, it will be so great if I could do that. Only difference is that I have analog controls... so if they could go on top of the OBC, it would look better.

Now I have to find out if OBD-I (I have a 92 320i) can be tapped into. I don't even have the I-Bus cable in my car. Any ideas if I can still use a carputer to tap into the OBD-I ECU to get speed readings, control the lighting, etc?

Oh, and just realised that it will probably be harder relocating the analog climate control unit as it is mechanically driven

I think the OBD-I one was not very standardised. There are specialist forums for OBD stuff, if you search there should be some links in other threads. I will be looking into connecting to OBD-II at a later date, other things to solve and build first

Yeah, not sure what the connectors are like for the manual ones. suggest you go to the scap yard and pick up some spare bits to play around with, that's what I do.

Dropping it on top of the OBC might be a good idea, as you say less distance to alter.

The first tutorial will be on how I've mounted the screen in the space, then on how I moved the climate control, and finally one on the head unit.
