    gee...sounds familiar.
most people are going to tell you to download Lavasoft's Ad-aware and Spybot - Search & Destory, which are both freeware and can be found on download.com.

On top of what razor suggested, you may want to switch to the Mozilla Firefox browser. Firefox has a nice built-in pop-up blocker. However if you're really into IE, then DL an external pop-up blocker app...

Don't click on every bloody thing that comes up in your browser, for one. That's how your popup ad crapware gets installed.
Next, get a good adware-removal tool. I'd suggest Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy, personally. I've had good luck with both of those.
Keep it updated and run it often.

Personally, I don't run any adware-removal software on any of my 4 computers. I don't need to because I pay attention to what I'm doing when I'm surfing.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

NEver had a problem with ad ware or pop ups till I got broadband, they must be able to sniff it out or something. A total pain in the arse and slows everything right down.

mikerd4, do yourself a favor and buy one of these broadband routers. I'd suggest an SMC product. They are not expensive and have hardware firewall. You will see the difference right away , believe me.
Now you complain about pop-ups and I am sure that in a month you will be complainig about viruses.
I know that from experience. Pop-ups don't have anything to do with firewalls, but it helps .
If you are not sure, go to BestBuy and buy something - you can always return it if you do not like it .

if youve never had a problem till you got broadband you should probably think about getting a firewall. i swear by hardware firewalls, but i guess software should be just as good
