    2.4D Surfs

I've heard really bad things about the engines gaskets on the 2.4s, I would steer well clear and go for a 3.0D. Well that is for the UK.

www.hiluxsurf.co.uk or www.yotasurf.co.uk are a great place for info.

I do like the look of them though, could do with some 20's or 22's in my opinion, but I rarely go offroad!

    Switches and Engines

Mines a 30. TD. I had an '88 model for two years, with the 2.4TD 9 though it was basically an Oz 2LT engine with a Turbo, versus the 2.4 EFI Turbo Diesel in the early 90's model Surfs. Had no problems.

But having now driven the 30.o, they are worlds apart. The 1KZTE engine (3.0) is pretty much a Prado engine les sthe intercooler.

Tell your friend to spend the few extra dollars and get the 3 litre. Harder to find in a manual though - most of the ones on the market are auto (in fact, I bought mine in Melbourne).

    Switches:

Left of the A/C is the clock (though it was the same - my brother has the same model as yours). Below the hazad switch is a rear window demister switch.

    2.4 vs 3

Brothers is an SR5, you're right.

If mine had hard/soft, it's been removed. Often happened first time suspension got an upgrade after arr in Aust.

For 2 or 3 grand, at least suggest your friend trys a 3.0. Mine is still no rockets (it IS a diesel), but the difference on hills, and the ease at which it lopes along the highway is staggeringly different. Also, IMHO the 3.0 will offer less hassles in the long run in getting parts becasue od the similarity to the Prado.

Suggest you friend has a look at (or if he does buy, that he join www.toyotasurf.asn.au for some good advice. Like any, there is bias, but it is good for comparison between models. Theres a few 4RUnner and even a patrol driver as members, to.

how about changing up that useless cup holder below the vents? i bet you could figure out a way to have the screen in there so that when you open the "cup holder" it slides out then tilts down. yes, it would cover up your heater controls, but there's enough room to fit your hand behind it, especially if you just have to tilt it up a little. i know in my dad's truck those cup holders were worthless... and always dripped condensation or spilled the drink on the shifter.

you could always find another place to hang your mic... like the flat spot to the left of the steering wheel.

    Nice Surf

    G'day ANZAC,

What a great looking Surf. I to have a surf that has a snorkel, bullbar and recently a very small lift job. I liked the photo of your dash and was curious to know how you setup your radio. I am assuming it is a UHF with a detachable face, but it looks neat. Once I get a payout from my current job I plan to place a Uniden Detachable face UHF radio in the car so that I can do a couple of Cape trips.

I am a huge fan of the surf. I got mine in Perth and have driven it all over Aust and it has not missed a beat. Towed a boat through central Aust with no problems at all.

Overall, mate, really nice looking rig.

    Cheers
