Talking What can be done with a Mazda6?

Hi, even though this is my first post, i've been hangin around this site for a while getting ideas for a carPC in my new Mazda6. I have been able to get a lot of very helpful information, but I still have a couple questions.

    1. Has anyone ever designed a screen setup where the monitor (in a double din sized opening or slightly larger) is either motorized or on hinges(like this Eclipse AVN2454)so that it folds down to reveal a slot loading DVD drive?

    2. Since i plan on removing the stock head unit completely, i am left with a small LCD display which also contains my clock, outside temperature, and HVAC controls. Could there be a way to use this display for volume or song title display? Where can i read up about this?

    3. Has anyone ever built in a knob(s) to there dash to be used for volume instead of having to use the touch screen?

    All help is appreciated!
    Thanks, Neal

    Heya!

    Another mazda6 user! Woo!

Check out the link in my signature. Also.. http://www.clubatenza.com < mazda6 forum

    http://www.clubatenza.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=114 < my carputter thread!

    To answer your questions:

    1) If you're thinking of doing a map pocket install, it's possible but I found that it's too far for my reach inside the pocket, which kinda ruins the touchscreen functionality. Hence the reason why I installed it outside the pocket. Otherwise, you could modify/remove the HU HVAC controls and put in the screen in there.. But that requires a bit more work with bondo/fiberglass and relocating the stock HU hardware.

    2) No. People have tried but to no avail. If you remove the HU you will loose the top LCD module with it.

    3) Easy, check out griffin, you could control it through that. You might also want to check out the audio / electronics section on clubatenza for the aux-in sticky.. it has some info about overloads module. It will allow you to keep the steering wheel controls and interface them through RS232 to your carputter! Neat huh!

GL on your project. Make sure you post some pics once you get it done!

    [COLOR=Navy]thanks IG!

I was actually hoping to remove the entire radio and build a custom display where it used to be, and run all my audio off of a surround sound audio card in case which will send signals to an amplifier and to the speakers.

Does anyone have any good ideas for center channel speakers? Crutch field has a Clarion single din speaker that looks promising, anyother ideas?[/

You could get a replacement LCD which would allow whatever you wanted with some programming...

proTONEd has a character LCD in his car (not the same install but gives you an example...) It's only 20x2 but they make other sizes that should fit the opening...

Some Mazda3 owners have actually smoothed over the LCD part. I'll have to find some pics.

    Edit:
Here's another guy with a character LCD install...
