    Lightbulb Building a CarPC...

    Hello everyone

I'm new to the scene but I would like your help on the planning of my car PC

Well let's get to the point, shall we
Can you tell me if the Opus 90 W Power supply is sufficent for the following PC config :

    Celeron 600 Mhz CPU
    256 Mb RAM
    15 Gb Hard Disk
    Sound On-board
Riva TNT2 32 Mb Video Card
    DVD-Rom

    or should I use an Opus 150 W ?

Oh and if someone out there has a car like mine (Renault Clio 1.2 16V - 2002 Version) I would be happy if he/she could tell me the best spot to put the LCD Touchscreen

    Thanks

Yes the 90 will be sufficient enough to run that setup but you might want to consider the future. You might wanna more powerful machine in the future so I would consider the 150.

I bought the 150W - as it will use less power with a less powerful board, and less pople have had 'issues' with them I think

You might need a bigger HDD - depends on how many MP3s you want

What are you planning for the screen? VGA touchscreen is a good bet (Xenarc/Lilliput)

    Hi stevieg

Yes I thought of a bigger HDD...but for now because of my low budget, I want to keep it low cost...maybe in a month or two I'll manage to buy one

    I was thinking buying a 7" Lilliput from CarTFT.com...is this a good choice ?

    Thanks

Yes I already have the 15 Gb HDD. I forgot to mention but the config I'm planning to use is my girlfriend's old computer She doesn't need it anymore (bought a new one), so I figured I could use it for my CarPC Project

Sounds like $99 isn't much...maybe I'll save a little bit and buy one next month

    Thanks

I got my Lilliput from cartft.com and I've been very happy with it, so yes I would say it's a good choice.

One good thing with using a mid-life HDD like a 15GB is that you probably know it works fine by now so if it does break (unusual) you know it's not that it was a faulty drive to start with. When you get a new one, make sure you run it through it's paces on a desktop machine first to check for any defects before putting it in the car pc!

Thanks for the advice stevieg For now I'll use the 15 Gb HDD (like some sort of temporary storage device) until I buy the new one

Ah by the way, great site stevieg I'm curious about your software development for your car, can't wait to see the results

Welcome Kusanagi Kei, I lived in the Algarve (Carvoeiro) many years ago. It was an awesome place to live, but I hear its spoiled by the tourists.
For now I would recommend just using a cheapo inverter, the Lilliput alone will run you $300.00, plus cables, etc. By the time you're done you'll easily have $500.00 spent. and that's using the pc that you allready have, with that 15Gig HD (nothing wrong with that)
This way you'll at least have a carputer running. I think it's better to do a "cheap" install first, this way you'll get better ideas and knowledge along the way and end up with a better plan for the 2nd carputer. (Than sell your first one)
    Good luck...
