They look similar to the body vents you see on the B pillars when you open your door, and look below the striker. these vents exhaust to outside air, and usually are used to bring in fresh air when the heat/ac unit is off, and to equalize inside air pressure when you close a door when the windows are up.
Would it not be good to let some air through? to the back of the display, to cool it some?
In the winter, when using heat,...the heat would not blow through the top vents? but through the floor vents, right?

Yes and no. The heat and a/c use the same air ducts. Most cars have a panel select for the vent location, meaning the driver can switch between top of dash,(defrost) floor or panel (dash), which would be the area of discussion. If you were to only use the floor, or top of dash in the winter when you have the heat on, then sure, leave the dash vent partially open. But, what if say, on one of those nasty cold mornings you want that nice toasty warm air blowing out the dash vents to warm your hands? then, you would have hot air blowing on the back of your lcd, which already generates more than enough heat.
Now, summer time, with the a/c blowing, this would be ideal as you now have a free, effective cooling method for that hot screen.
It really becomes a toss up, but in my opinion, blocking off the unused vents and re-directing them elsewhere would probably serve best, since you won't limit yourself when it comes to use of any of the vent choices for heat or a/c.
    Hope this makes sense.
