    In Design Phase

Please don't flaim me for this thread but I'll looking for ideas and comments from people who have actually gone through the hassle of doing all this work and try to get right the first time (that what this forum is here for I hope).

In a nutshell, I have a 98 Mercury Mystique that I really don't want it to look like a geek center (more because of theft concerns) when it is all said and done. That being said, I'm looking at the Sun Visor Monitors as my display. I'm not really interested in DVDs while driving but will most likely use my system for GPS and MP3 fuctions. Do they make a visor touchscreen? Thoughts on this piece as the LCD placement is my biggest concern....

My second concern is how should I operate the system. I really don't want to give up being able to play a normal cd and FM stations like normal people do (like I said I'm trying to keep the car from looking like something a thief would want). Would a remote/keypad be my best choice? Too bad I can't use my Treo 600 as the keyboard and nav buttons (maybe I can design an app though as I've written palm apps in the past).

Third issue which I believe is a non-issue is sound transmitting. If possible I believe I can just transmit the carputer to my existing CD Player and speakers using a FM transmitter.

The following is the list of functions I want to put in the design:
MP3 and GPS (two biggest pieces)
802.11b or g for home network syncing
Cellular support when my Treo 600 in car cradle using PDANet for web surfing including X10 home automation and TiVo controls
    SD Card reader
    Calendar viewing and syncing
Maybe XM radio through XM PCR software
    System case placement in trunk

you can find the answer to every one of your questions if you had searched for 5 minutes on this site.

Sometime I really wonder why they even bother making forums for newbies to ask questions when you have morons like that. This is the same guy who posts about how many posts he has written.

Anyway, does anybody other than 17 year old Pimpj have any suggestions. I'm not seeing much on Sun Visor touchscreens...

They only answer that way because questions like this are asked on a daily basis. is a very good tool to find what you need.

But to answer your question I have not seen a visor touchscreen yet I would think it would be hard to get the screen and touchscreen overlay crammed into a visor.

What headunit are you using? You could go with FM but the quality kinda sucks but I know people that do it.

Yeah I know the same questions get asked daily but everyone seems to have something a little different. Thanks for the non-flaim answer.

The best info I've found on touchscreen visors has been at http://www.digitalww.com/VGA_Lilliput-to-SunVisor.html but I'm a little hesitant at spending all that money to modify two devices in my first attempt.

The head unit currently isn't anything special so I may break down and upgrade it. It's the one piece I didn't want to touch as I'm not sure how many more years I'll get out of this car (looking at Prius in future so different head unit design) but all the other pieces will be reusable.

On the sound transmit issue, you think I should just hard wire it? The only reason why I was looking at FM was I should easily be able to cut the sound to mute and switch to my cell phone on same frequency when the phone is ringing or I make a call with a little work.

    1) You could go for a 7" TS roof mount.
    2) ATI remote wonder: cheap and has lots of functions. Or if you have steering wheel controls you could still use them through the serial por. It has been discussed. I think you can use your palm as a kind of remote.
    3) If you want sound quality loose the FM Modulator. Get an amp or a HU with an aux input. Or depending on your current HU you can get a connector that gives you an aux input through the CD changer ports.
