    Idea/Questions

    Hi all,

Been reading these forums for a couple of weeks and am preparing for my first steps ;-) I recently purchased a 2004 Yukon Denali and would like to put in an in-dash touchscreen (DigitalWW DWW-7VGT). I am trying to keep the factory installed radio and 6 cd changer, although I want to tie into the radio/speakers for computer functions.

Below is a screenshot close to what I have (I didn't opt for the nav system so mine is a CD/cassette combo). I would like to put the in-dash monitor above the 6 cd changer in the lower right corner where the small storage area and extra power outlet is..

I have a couple of questions ;-) I will need to remove the trim and what not - are there any manuals for doing this? I will also need to create a new bezel - I have read how to do this in the Fabrication section but was wondering if there are places that do this kind of thing.

If anyone else has comments, I would appreciate it!

I would suggest that you put the screen where the radio is currently and move the radio down to where you plan to put the screen. I say this because you want the screen to be higher. You don't want to look down and take your eyes off the road for too long, to see your screen. If the screen is higher it is much easier to see and access. With the radio being lower you could alway feel for the buttons, plus you already know it pretty well, so you don't have to take your eyes off the road too mcuh. This is what I would do if I had the Yukon.

Look for a Chilton's manual. It'll tell you how to take the whole damn car apart.

    First off, nice car.
I would have to agree with Quattro-A4. You want the screen as high as possible. Mine is in a temporary position down by the stick shift and is way too low for me. Plus no one in the back seat can see it in my car becuase it is so low.

    word.

Having the screen way down low in an awkward spot can be a pretty big nuissance. I'm a head unit h8er, and if you have a computer that works perfectly for music, why keep the radio/cd changer?

Why not try to relocate the AC/Heater controls to the location you want the screen and place both the Touchscreen and HU up top? A lot of work but I think it'll look great once done.

Denali indash install over headunit and AC

I have been contemplating doing the same thing, sort of.

My 2001 Yukon Denali has a dash bezel that is likely similar to your later model Denali. In fact, most of the 2001 or later model GM dash bezels can be removed and replaced easily. -Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe, Avalanche, Escalade, etc...

Here's how: Sitting in the driver's seat reach to the upper right corner and pull striaght out, until it pops out of place. Don't worry. It won't break. It will pop off in that corner, then you will need to work your way around it, poping off the rest of it. I did this to take a look at the setup of the ac controls and factory head unit and the bezel poped back into place with no problem. I learned about it here, from someone who was doing something his onstar unit: http://openminds.net/onstar/1dash.htm

Do make sure you disconnect your battery before you mess around with anything further!

I'm not sure about your head unit orientation, but in mine its not quite the size of a double din, so fitting a 7" widescreen in there and keeping the ac controls in place is kind of out. Looking closer, if I can relocate the ac controls (any help here would be much appreciated) I would have just enough room for a 10.4 inch touch monitor.

Keep us updated on your progress!

Yeah, I wish I could be tracked constantly and have someone in a remote office have control over my vehicle.

That's the beauty of the carputer... you don't NEED OnStar.
