    Preconfigured CarPuters

Ive been looking at xenarc and carcpu and basically im looking for a featurefilled pc for my car with gps mp3 video and audio capabilities

gaming and internet are not important to the pc,

one thing that is important is i need one that will keep powered thru cranking and have a low battery warning. so far carcpu is the only one that really offers this as far as ive found.

knowing nothing as far as car pcs waht starter/base sytems are good that come preconfigured or what is a good place to start looking

ive used to my wits end i need some feedback from the pros
    thx

before people start flaming you for not searching, I implore you (eatmyyummypuppies, that is as technical of a word as I know) to use OUR search function, and read thru the forums. we have several ways to survive a crank, for example. The ideas are all here, just need to look for them.

If your going for a prebuilt system, carcpu seems a bit expensive for what you get. There are other sites out there that build good systems for less. Logic supply and industrialflowerfactory are a couple I looked at before I decided to build my own. I've been building my own pc's for 12 years so I knew I could do it blindfolded, but not everyone is comfortable doing so. Just do your homework, read around here (best) and you'll be fine. Here's what I would look for in a system.

    Mini-Itx board (epia M10000 or MII10000)
    256-512mb ram
laptop 2.5" HDD (much lower power requirements than 3.5" HDDs)
    slim slot load DVD drive
small footprint case (Morex, Casetronic, etc)
Opus 90 or 150w power supply or if you buy a case that comes w/a PS then get a Carnetix CNX-P1260 or P1280 (when available)
USB GPS Mouse w/software of choice (iGuidance 2.0, Routis2004, etc)
    Lilliput or Xenarc VGA touchscreen

    Optional
    802.11x wi-fi adapter
    wireless keyboard/mouse combo

Hope this helps you in your search.

I don't think that even the factory built units come with preloaded GPS software.
You'll need to purchase that separately, as well as a receiver and other devices.
Carputers aren't something you can just plug in as any stereo, unfortunately.
Most enthusiasts here build their carputers because they enjoy "building" it, not because they need one
    00 Saturn SL2, boosted @ 8 psi - CarDomain

    My 2nd carputer - b4 I broke the touchscreen
My very first carputer - voted the most ghetto

You can get a prebuilt carputer...I've found one with everything you need...also GPS...ready to pop in your car...but it isn't very cheap. you are right when you say most ppl on here don't realy need a carputer...but they just enjoy to built one (including me)...but maybe some people wanna buy a prebuilt.

    There is no such animal.
You can get prebuilt CarPCs from several vendors. You know there's a search tool, so use it. Google will help as well.
However, these are just the pre-assembled hardware. There's no operating system, software, etc. That's all on you.
It will be that way until Gateway starts making CarPCs and loading all sorts of crap onto them like they do their desktops & laptops.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

thx for everyones feedback. I myself do enjoy building my own computers as well but when it comes to putting one in the car Im just a little weary. the last time i had my ps2 in there the audio was horrible and it went to waste , literally it sits there unplayed maybe played it twice, hmm anyone wanna but a use playstatio....... nevermind
but seriously, i d like to build it but mainly the power consumption, and amp draws are like another language to me, from what ive gathered from the site an opus is the be all and the end all as far as bringing funtionality to the car

carcpu.com claims to have the gps software harware and everything ready to go but it is a bit expensive so im not sure which direction to go
