Also is this hobby really advanced from an automotive/wiring perspective or can the basics be learned relatively easily? I'm into computers and all but pretty much never messed with cars before.

I searched google and this site a bit but mostly found posts about howto install this stuff or well too detailed information ... I just want general answers as I'm curious what exactly some of this stuff is used for.

1. Global positioning satallite. Use a reciever with GPS software and it will show you where you are and tell you how to get where you want to go.

No monthly fee. Just buy a receiver and the software and you never have to pay again.

The receiver is inexpensive, but the navigation software is a little chunk of change (correct me if I'm wrong). just pull down the search tab in the forums and start searching. If your realy interested in the hobby, theres no better place than this site.

Actually the receivers are pretty expensive themselves. I think the cheapest I have seen them are the ebay ones that go for about $60 (like I said that is the cheapest I know of). You are correct about the price of the navigation software. Most of it is pretty expensive (~$100)
