See, my thing is, using windows 98 is overkill if you aren't using a monitor. Or mouse. Why not cut out a lot of useless files, free up some needed space, and cut your boot time down to about 1/10 of win 98? It will function pretty much the same as windows, other than not taking a long f-in' time to boot up, and not having to deal with possible windows corruption if not shut down properly.

If you decide to go DOS, just go to http://bootdisk.com and download what you need there. Then just add the drivers for your sound card and NIC. Done.

If you want a *nix installation that works very nicely, very fast, and supports all the good hardware, check out Ubuntu Linux. Powerful stuff, and you can easily yank the GUI out of there.

I love how this turns into a ***** fight instead of helpfull information.

But anyway You might want to get a cheap vfd or lcd for the display and a remote it would make life a lot more easy. yor talking probaly $30-$50 more.

Yeah, VFD's are cool, but expensive. I had a 4x20 LCD with my dos setup, and an IRman. It was pretty sweet. I agree, add some kind of informational display, so you know what you're doing. Mpxplay even dos drive navigation and shows it on the LCD. Good call man.

ok i have to agree here TFT, lcd or similar would be good if u have the money ( my m8 just got me one cheap) just if u do go for tft technically they are illegal unless htey are part of a 'navigation system' so buy and plug in a GPS modlue ( makes the screen legal)

They would also be legal if used as part of the vehicle sound system (radio and CD control).
You cannot have visualizations going on, but as long as all that can be seen at the time you get pulled over are controls for EQ and such, then you're still on safe ground.
