    n00b confused!

Hey all, just new tonight. Like a lot of you i'm sure came up with a 'masterful' plan to put a computer in the car. I already knew the powersupply would be a problem. I believe with the DC-DC powersupplies that fixes that problem though. One of my big questions is why cant u just use a regular LCD screen with a mouse or touchscreen cards or whatnot? I'm getting lost on this whole issue of why to use Telliput or that other brand. if it's connecting to the graphics card i just figured a monitor is a monitor no matter what u choose to use, even if it's a CRT. maybe that brings up power issues though or sun glare. Also as far as conneting the audio equipment, in my case i have 3 amps so 3 rca jacks are needed. I assume hooking everythign up to a nice sound card is the same as a nice headunit right? how would i do that if i need 3 rca cables?
I guess it's the monitor question that is really bothering me. I tried searching but im getting really lost. thanks guys if someone can shed some light here

U can use whatever monitor U'de like. if it's something strange, you may have trouble finding a controller to connect it to the computer, but pretty much yah, anything will work. Lilliput's are used because they're a. cost efficient b. integrated touch screen and c. common to carPCs(easier trouble shooting)

sound card - yah, you can get a USB card with just about whatever U want

How exactly will you fit a CRT in the front of your car? Unless you drive an 18 wheeler I don't see that happening.

haha yea that was just bringing up a point that i dont see why you cant use any monitor u want, which i guess u can as was stated. I would probably want to use a internal soundcard, nothing external. HOw would i connect 3 sets of rca's to that? also i like my quality sound. What would i use to configure everything. I know winamp has a eq built in, other there other progs. used to configure teh speakers and make everything sound good? I figure as long as i have crossovers for all my speakers i will get the frequencies i want no matter what is being sent through the rca cables from the computer. A computer is a lot different than a headunit, i'm just trying to get that all sorted out how you can make the computer do functions like a headunit would. thanks all.

    1) 3 sets of RCAs would connect to a 1/8"-to-RCA adapter. You can get them almost anywhere, but you'd want good quality.
    2) You want quality sound, then the external Soundblaster Audigy is the way to go. It has the RCA connections and better quality output.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

yesssss....definitely concerned about keeping teh same quality of sound that i would get from a headunit. I have dropped A LOT of money into my system and i need to keep it sounding at least the same if not better. Would an Audigy internal card work teh same or would u reccomend teh external? what reasons. thanks

This is from my post (I asked for a sticky). HOW TO: Get sound from PC to Car Stereo / Amp

Heres how you would do muliple channels:

You would need a 4+ channel sound card. I use a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. It's a 5.1 card I just don't use the center channel.

w0rd, looks good. I guess it would help if i looked at my soundcard manual first :P
Now with those y adaptors do you lose any quality of sound there?
And i assume there's programs and such that i can have cutoff frequencies for each output(rear, sub, front) so say if i want the the sub output to cuttoff frequencies at 80hz LP i can do that through PC programs? or will i be strictly limited to what a external crossover can do? thanks it's finally starting to make sense.

No, you don't loose sound quality from the Y adapters.

    You can use these instead:

Easily found at your local Ratshack.

You can use software to EQ but I wouldn't use software to control cut-off frequencies. Definitley use hardware crossovers.

Am i assume if you buy one of the DC-DC power supplies, say 115w, your only putting 115 watts extra on the alternator? I'm surprised people are using so small of a power supply and getting away with it. IS it because they're more efficient? thanks
