I'm new here and I don't mind getting "Search" replies if they contain keywords. It takes time learning this forum lingo![]()

Two things worth a mention here, firstly, not everyone can read as well as some here can type. For some, reading can be a slow and painful process and I think forum regulars all over can forget this. Reading means information gathering and because most posts look well written and have a reasonable standard of wordage it doesnt meant that everyone has the same ability.
Secondly, if your working hard for your money and have perhaps 3 or 4 hours of free time in the evening (if you are lucky), that time goes really quickly sometimes and faced with searching for unknown hours or just asking, sometimes its just simpler to ask and get on with something else (perhaps reading other areas of the site).
thats all..
That's exactly what I was thinking as I started reading the thread. The fact is, a forum is a great medium for discussion, but a horrible medium for building a knowledge base. There's only a minimum of organization (the subforums themselves,) searches are mediocre at best, and threads tend to have a low signal/noise ratio. The last bit's not a knock on the people here, it's just the nature of dialogue. I think a wiki would complement the forums nicely.Originally Posted by hijinks21
And I agree with Nic; this is probably one of the most helpful and civil forums I've been a member of (which isn't many, I can't stand most of them - but it's a pleasure to browse though this one.)
I'm most bugged when someone asks a question that is in the Newbie FAQ sticky. But, I also understand that quite often Newbies are excited to have found the forum and want to jump in. They're just tickled that all this info is here so they may ask the first thing that comes to mind, just to engage.
That's fine and I actually scour the Newbie posts to try and give them a search term that helps them along because I don't like to see them get flamed and dejected. Okay, often I laugh out loud at Darque Pervert's posts, so I guess I'm not wholly well intentioned.
It's also annoying when you give someone the answer, then they ask a question about the next step and you answer that, then they ask the next step and pretty soon you're spoon feeding them. Can't do that. You don't become a Tae Kwon Do blackbelt without putting in the hours and Car PC's are sufficiently complicated to require putting in some time. So I guess some of the reaction is from people who have put in the time and are exasperated that n00bs don't appear to appreciate that.
Frankly, I couldn't have figured out my carputer without this forum and I try to first search, then ask an intelligent clarifying question after trying to figure it out on my own.
Want to:
-Find out about the new iBug iPad install?
-Find out about carPC's in just 5 minutes? View the Car PC 101 video
this is completly true, most of us dont have unlimited free time, and thats why we get annoyed when we see the same questions over and over again, we dont have time to answer the same thing over and over again and dont want to waste time sifting through all the duplicate information. Seconded the idea of a mp3car wiki. But both the primary forum (head page) and the newbie section should have some FAQs, even if they are generic.
Aka
FAQ #1 - Read these rules before posting
FAQ #2 - What is a carputer/mp3car?
FAQ #3 - How do I power a carputer/mp3car?
(with generic stuff like inverter vs. dc-dc power supply vs. solar :P, to give them an idea of up-to-date products just point them towards mp3car.com store)
FAQ #4 - How do I plug the sound from my computer into the stereo?
FAQ #5 - Do I need a head unit?
FAQ #6 - Search Techniques + common search queries for your use.
etc... but the main thing should be that these FAQ be displayed loudly so 'newbs' can see them as well as have no clutter. So remove any off topic posts, make them stickies, and make sure they contain legitimate information.
well I'm a "new person to this delightful forum" (scourge posted that in a thread earlier somewhere) and I think it's hard to just start using the search feature. For example, I wanted to know about using desktop lcd's as a display for the carputer. I posted a question, and it was suggested (nicely) that I search for the subject. Fact is, when I next went to punch in the search parameters, I was only met with one response--my own stinkin thread!! I just entered what came to mind, "desktop LCD" and it didn't work. I figured I could change it to "15 inch LCD"---Nothing. I finally just found it by looking at every post in the display section, but my point is that it took a very long time for me to aquire the info I needed without any vet's help with search parameters. I think that once you add that extra sentance..."Go do a search n00b!!!...try searching specifically for laptop's vs. desktops" even if you word it poorly and negativly, you're still being constructive, and the n00b can learn from your post.
my thoughts...hehe
Carputer Status:
|----[---------] negative 10% complete...Still fathoming how this might possible work in my F-150...it will work!!!
OK let me get this right. You are a NOOB if you don't have many posts (Kinda like me)Originally Posted by ppgt94
