    Noob says hi!

    Hi,
been lurking around here as a guest for a while now and thought it was about time I walked up to the bar and introduced myself.

I've been interested in building a CarPC for a little while now and thanks to plenty of reading on here and some searching I'm ready to give it a go.

my goal is to replace the head unit in an MR2 with a PC & amp arrangement.
This will play MP3s, do a bit of Sat Nav and have some bluetooth phone connectivity for hand free. I will need to set up a radio as well.

    Current status;

I've just placed an order for an EPIA 800 mobo
Place order for a DLink USB DRU-100 radio (gulp )
am in dicussions to purchase a Xenarc and also a PSU combo (probably ITPS & PW-60A, can't really stretch to an OPUS)

Need to get a HDD, probably 2.5" but would prefer a 3.5" because of the cost/size ratio is better but I 'understand' that there are 12v rail issues to be overcome. So this may be a "suck it and see" issue.

Originaly planned to have wireless connection to the house for MP3 uploads but the thought of having the car running on the drive while I run indoors to transfer the files didn't seem too sensible.
So plan 'B' is to use either a CF cardreader and CF card or perhaps a USB pen drive to transfer the files. Media Engine has an auto sync directories option I assume I can use that?

Purchased a spare centre dash from a breakers to fit the screen into. I figure this will not be a two minute job so I've removed the time pressures.
Didn't mention but the MR2 is the wifes
Once I've perfected the build I'll do the same in my own car........ LOL

The MR2 is a bit tight for space and the two cubby holes behind the seats are full of sub units so I'm planning to build an enclosure behind the passenger seat (full width, window to rear centre console) to install the PC and amps in.

    Anyhow, rambled enough for now.

Hope to repay some of the information that I've picked up sometime.

    Kevin

If you can, I would replace the Epia 800 with at least an M10000, they are much faster.

    Also, don't bother with a DRU-100, wait for Seth's fm/am/rds device.

Forget an ITPS. They are rubbish, and I wouldn't subject my worst enemy to having to use an ITPS, let alone a loved one. Either save for an Opus, or get a Carnetix. These will allow you to sync files wirelessly with the engine off.

    Good choice on a Xenarc.

    damn - too late

Just placed an on line order for Xenarc and PSU as described
Ah well, I'll use it a learning exercise and get some experience....

Still got 1 out of 3 right

As I said, the first install will be for the Mrs who just wants a radio/MP3 player with sat nav. So requirements are not so high.

I'll get it right for when I do mine.

Confused - just noticed you are the proud owner of a "Carlos Fandango" anglebox, Excellent

Is it the 2 tone with the chrome strip down the side?

Believe me...you'll want to get it right (power at least) for the missus! She's not going to appreciate it when she starts the car and the computer resets (which it will with the ITPS + PW70)

Heh, yeah I do have an Anglebox...not two tone, but it does have a chrome strip down the side

Stick around here, and you'll see what I finally do with it (and no, i won't be ripping the rear wheels off on gate posts! )

    Whereabouts in Essex are you??

I don't know how you are going to mount your monitor, but if you are going to take it apart, there is a good deal on ceiling mount Xenarc here on mp3car.com.

$299 for Xenar TS is very good deal.

The MR2 is a T-bar, so no room for a ceiling mount. I had looked at that.
The MR2 does have a double DIN socket so I don't see any major issues with installing the screen (famous last words)
I've ordered the screen now. I didn't fancy ordering and them being stuffed for import duty/tax.

    Confused
you are starting to frighten me now
I'm looking at this as a learning experience, if it fails I'll put it right.

Nice to see you picked up on the Fandango reference

ryuandwings - I've just had a peek at your web site.

Am I correct in thinking you have fitted the whole ITX pc into a double DIN space?
    If so,
Wow, I'm going to have to have the dash out of the MR2 and have a peek and see what is possible.

That's turned my ideas on their head.

    cheers

    Kevin,

Believe me, I've used an ITPS along with a Morex PSU (basically the same as a PW-60A) and it wasn't pretty. Wouldn't power up the 3.5" hdd with the engine off, and if it was running, and i tried to start the engine, the PC would reset. I've since moved to an Opus, and I can't fault it.

The Morex PSU is now in my dad's Shogun, and being run from a Carnetix, and again, I can't fault it. Both mine and my dad's survive starting the engine (even on the 2.5l Diesel in his Shogun).

Oh, and he's got an Anglia too! However his has Subaru 1800cc + 4x4 running gear!

With the double-din in the MR2, you should be OK...you might or might not have the depth, but you should be able to reasonably easily get the screen in there

Can I ask where you've bought the stuff from? I can recommend Lin-ITX.com and PCMediaStore.com, bought stuff from both of them

Yeah, I have most of my stuff in the double din space.
Only thing to watch out is air flow. It tends not get enough air back there.

Also, just to make you feel better, I have ITPS+PW70 setup right now. And it works. It will not survive crank and you need to have car running all the time, but it has been OK for 5 months or so. Off course OPUS will be better and I will upgrade eventually. Just like you, I did not know better when I started.
