Apline IVA-D300 as touchscreen for car computer?

I have an Alpine IVA-D300 and I'm interested in putting a computer in my car. My question is if I can use the touchscreen feature on the headunit? The HU has auxillary inputs, but they are only rca audio/video. There are more inputs but im not too sure what they are for. Can anyone help me out?

the short answer is no, while nothing is impossible it wouldn't be practical. The two main reasons are that in your conversion from vga (computer video output) to composite(the rca input to your'e alpine) you will lose enough resolution that small normal computer text will be pretty much unreadable, add to that the fact that it would be EXTREMELY difficult to use the alpine touch screen overlay to contol the pc & actually function as a touch screen. It would involve techniques & interfaces not available to the average consumer, not to mention the disassy & "butchering" of your'e alpine....,It actually could be done as the overlay on the alpine touchscreen is of the common 4 wire resistive variety,(with an added tactical feedback system that wouldn't work for the pc anyway) however you would have to get a controller to interface to it, & at the same time have it not affect the overall resistance so it wouldn't affect operation of the alpine, you would also have to devise a way for these wires to extend through alpines motorized mechanisim & out of the head unit to the controller, but even if you did accomplish that, you would be back to the original problem of an unreadable low quality display as far as computer displays go, & therefore be a wasted effort at best... again, short answer, forget it...it's not practical

Not to mention that anything Alpine will cost you a kindey, a pint of virgin blood, and $5000.

Dude, why? I still have my kidneys (both I think) & a pint of virgin blood would take a whole lot of sheet ringing....which sounds like fun maybe, but TOTALLY unnecissary(wish there was a spell checker here)

my alpine touch screen cost me $1,100 & the pxa-701 processor was another $600 or so

$1,700 for state of the art that is installable in a few hours...plays dvd's, mp3's, camera inputs, not to mention having 5 seperate 31 band 1/3 octave digital eq's built in at my fingertips, literally...

I too enjoy & obsess about installing a pc in my car, but I don't understand the whole negative thing about stand alones

If you count the time involved in getting a pc to do that, I sugest that it is possible it would cost you more in reality for less, maybe not in cold hard cash out of pocket, but what is a few MONTHS of spare time worth to YOU?
