    using a laptop

    whats everyones thoughts about justing using a laptop that has a bad screen? my company just gives away laptops that are no longer under warranty if something breaks. even if its a 30 dollar keyboard. i happen to have a 1ghz ibm laptop with a bad screen just 1 usb out but it does have a DVD player.

    Plug an external monitor into it (like a Xenarc) and it'll be fully functional again. Hard to mount a laptop in a car so you can use its screen anyways.

    well i understand that part.. i mean is it just as good as using a cheap computer. i can't really upgrade the sound car etc. i would have to use a USB hub etc. can u still use something like opus to put it in sleep mode etc.

    Opus is designed for ITX or ATX boards. Laptops are neither of these. So, no, it won't work. You can re-use the RAM, HDD, DVD-ROM in a carputer project though. That will easily save quite a bit of money...Feel like sending one of those laptops my way?

    lol if i did that i may as well just use one of the blue million decomped 1ghz machines. they are already small form factor and 512 megs of ram. i just thought laptop might serve better w/ the HD etc.

    Get a laptop car power supply and use an ITPS wired to the power button on the laptop to turn it on/off. The onboard sound will probably be noisy so I'd get an Audigy NX USB sound card.

    Car power adapter (though if you do a search for 'notebook dc power supply' I'm sure you'll find cheaper).
