Power Supply for a full size computer

I am looking to put a full size P4 computer into my Suburban. I think I have everything figured out in my head except for the power supply unit. I have looked through these forums a bit but can find much about the power supplies. I read that others are using Opus supplies. After reading through this site that sells Opus supplies and reading the FAQ. I see that it says “The power supplies we sell are specifically designed for mini-ITX motherboards”. Would someone enlighten me as to what supply to use? I do not want to use an AC/DC converter, way too much power loss.

    Thanx
    After Forever

Btw: what is a mini-ITX motherboard? How does it compare to a P4? Don’t want to go that route!

ITX is a form factor (size) of the motherboard. They usually have embedded processors. The OPUS 90 watt http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...products_id=30 is good power supply for this form factor.

How fast is your P4? The problem is that the latest scramming P4's will draw too much power for the current dc-dc power supplies available today. When you have a really fast system like that your best bet is the DC/AC inverter method with a regular AC/DC computer power supply.

SO, before I go out and blow more money on this god forsaken project, my (Rockford Fosgate) 300w inverter does not power my computer (mATX, 2400+, 240w PS, 1 - 120GB, 512m ram). The computer doesn't even turn on! I'm guessing that the inverter is just not powerful enough, or that my mobo has a feature that detects non-standard power and just won’t turn on. It's an AOpen MK79G-N and if I spend any more money on this, my wife may literally kill me. Getting in to this, I never would have imagined that I'd be spending so much. I just want it to frickin work!
Today I stuffed some dolls full of dead rats I put in the blender. I'm wondering if maybe, there really is something wrong with me.

Inverters are rated for their peek output. Their normal outputs are half of that. A 300 watt inverter would put of 150 watt. Look for at least a 600 watt inverter to power your 240 watt computer power supply.

I just went and bought a 750w "Vector" inverter (stated peak was 1500w) that came with 8aug battery clamps. I connected it up with the engine off and then with the engine on, but neither way would power the power supply. The red light on the inverter flashed (over volt/low batt) when I plugged the computer in. Odd problem wouldn't you say!

Maybe I should somehow test the PC to see the current draw? Maybe the pull from it is jacked in some manner? Too many amps?

750w vector should be ample power...check your power supply connections and possibly the power supply itself.
Is the vehicle running when you plug in the computer?
If yes, what is the voltage at the inverter?
Does the inverter make a whining noise when the red light turned on?

It did this with a 350w (700w max) Vector inverter I bought today too.

Vehicle was running while I tested it.
My alternator puts out >13.7, is it ok to put a multimeter on a battery to see the current?
    no noise from the inverter.
And I re-connected after failure to ensure good connection

    this might be a fix....
I had the same problem with the vector
    Inverter Problems

remove the ground on the inside of the powersupply and attach it to the outside of the case of the power supply
