    Newbie looking for information

I am new to the site and I have been reading a lot of different site to get information about building a carputer. I have had so much information that I am unsure what to go with so I figured ask and hopefully get all the information needed to start buying parts and building the system. I have already purchased the case off of ebay, so do not need that and I have decided on the VIA EPIA MII 12000 1.2Ghz Motherboard. My issue now is that I want install this on a Linux platform but I also want to make sure that I am able to perform all the functionality fairly easy. I am looking for this system to play music (mp3, wam, ogg, etc..,) watch movies, burn DVDs and CDs, navigational system, watch TV, listen to XM or Sirrus radio, send and receive e-mail, and listen to local radio stations. So my questions are what hardware do I need and what software do I need for this to work on a Linux platform? All help will be greatly appreciated.

Since we already have a newbie thread, not to hijack your thread or anything...

I am trying to compile a list of what I will need and approximate prices so I know how much $ to start saving up. Is this about all I would need?

    Screen - $300
    Power Supply - $200
    Case - $100
    Motherboard - $200
    Navigation Software - $100
    GPS - $50

    Total: $950

For Linux software, I believe Pycar (Python based) runs in that environment.

There is also Dash-PC (www.dashpc.com), and open source software product.

TJB627: You forgot a disk drive and RAM and a DVD+/-RW drive but you're in the ballpark. Check my site at iBug Hardware for a list and cost of my parts.

Matthew: I am just going to use the 1/8 to RCA cable to hook it into the AUX on my head unit.

Bugbyte: Yeah I did forget about the RAM and Hard Drive, on the DVD, for right now I think I'm gonna go without one then once I get some more money I'm gonna try to put one up front so I can watch movies.

Also, on these ITX motherboards, do the processors already come on the boards?

Thanks for the help though guys.

Some of the mini-itx boards come with onboard processors, you'll have to check. I would recommend that you start buying the bits and wait until you have everything working before you start thinking about installing.

Also if space is not an issue, I would recommend you go for a micro-atx board and case. You'll save money here.

I use a Intel D865GLC, which works well, and an matx case. Use whichever case suits the space. If you are really adventurous you may want to build your own !

Thanks for the information, I wanted an OS that is versatile and M$ does not offer the versatility that Linux does. So thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.
